hello excuse me stop what???
you say new fan i assume that is a overheating problem you have.
what socket is your cpu 478 pins or 775 lga ??

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Category=13&SubCat=FAN-775

from there for socket t (775)lga the artic cooler freezer pro or the zalman cnps9500-at if you have a huge case because this is one of the best hsf but is really big.

http://www.xoxide.com/thermalright-xp-90c-cpu-cooler.html

this is one of the best heat sink in the market is for socket 478 you can use it with or without a fan but it is recommend it with a 92mm fan that store is not in uk but i post it just for u to see the hsf.

hope i help

i have been getting artifacts on the screen, which i think is due to overheating yes. today i purchased(but wont get until tomorrow) is this fan, replacing the main case fan.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Papst_Fans.html

the one i bought is - Papst 3412 N/2 GLE 92mm Fan - 3 Pin (FG-010-PA)
priced at £9.95

will this be an improvment:S all i know is about my fan at the moment that its 90mm and is like 2-3 years old.
im hoping that by replacing this fan with the new one will cool my system down much more?

ok case fans help good choice but procesors overheat, vga cards overheat you need to cool those directly case fan help you cut few degress but wont solve the problem.

what procesor temps are you reading??
how far is your cpu overclock??
when you are getting this artifacs is your vga card overclock too??
when you say artifacts you mean in video like dots on screen or lines or wierd colors???

ok thats the problem your procesor is overheating you should use better procesar heat sink and fan as i recommend before.

about video card easy video card idle runs fine when you play games on high resolutions or very intense games like most of todays games the gpu(vga procesor) overheat due to all and load the stress and star to give artifacts.

normally a overheat cpu procesor cause system crash, freeze op system and slow performance. overheat vga gives you videos artifacts.

in conclusion.

1.try to replace procesor heat sink and fan
2.what video card you have? and i think you should get a better heatsink for that too.
3.case ventilation also helps the fan you bought 120mm good choice.
4.when replacing the cpu fan remember to use thermal grease artic silver 5 that can help you cut 5-7 c°

vga coolers:

remember to check compatibility before you buy at www.zalman.co.kr
they fit most of nvidia 6xxx series but check.

ok for the vga you have to remove the fan or heatsink from your vga card clean the gpu (vga procesor) beacuse you have to use thermal grease between heatsink and cpu to facilitate heat transfer.

after you remove your vga card hsf before you install de new one you have to clean the old grease and apply the artic silver the place the new heat sink and fan.

recomend always to check in fan manufacturer webpage compatibility and installment!

hope i help
