Ok so one night I was playing music on my computer (I leave it on when I sleep) then I woke up to a weird beeping noise, that went like beep beep beeeeeep. So I turn off my speakers and it goes away, so I thought it was just a song or something. Just to be safe though I turn off my computer.

Then I try to turn it on today, and I get a weird error screen (Something like incorrect boot or something like that) which I thought was caused by one of my faulty harddrives. So I unplug the power cord and unplug the other drive. Now my computer won't even turn on at all, I have a little light at the back that tells me when the PSU is powered, but it doesn't turn on when it's plugged in. Even when I unplug it all I get is the light to blink, not stay on.

I've tried keeping it unplugged for one day, then trying to plug it back in and that didn't work. I tried leaving it plugged in for a day and trying to turn it on but I still get the thing with the light not turning on/blinking.

It's happened before, but last time I fixed it by unplugging and plugging it back in, in quick succession. This time that doesn't work, anyone have any idea as to if it's the PSU or something else?

it is the psu beacuse a faulty hard drive can lock the bios or not booting in to windows.even if you dont get video or bios screen it should turn on like fans and everythink else. it think is the psu try to switch with another before you buy a new sometimes psu dont die alone the take mobo or cpu if it is due to a short circuit or overvolting or they simple stop working without harming the other components.

try to smell it to see if is smell like burn wire or something.

hope i help

Ok I'll see what I can do about getting a different PSU.

If anyting Ill just go out and buy something cheap that I can use for a couple days until I can order a better one.

Ill post back if I get any insight as to what was the problem, thanks.

Ok I took a PSU out of my old computer, this one seems to work.

Not really going to trust this cuz of the low wattage 250 watt max, so I'm going to go and order one later tonight. Thanks for the help :D

@Dr.xp

Hi!this just caught my attention because me too i've been getting a problem which is a bit similar to that, but not everytime, right now it's fine. The first time the problem appeared was when i tried to turn on my pc but the only thing i got was,it sounds like the pc turned on(fan noise) but nothing appears on the screen(just remained black and no small beeping),the light my casing kept on blinking and not on as it was supposed to be when the pc is on.I tried to turn off but by pressing the power button for several seconds and even more but nothing could turn off the pc.The only thing i could do was to unplug the power cord, but when i put it back,it would turn on the pc automatically(but still with the black screen and the blinking light on my casing). It only stopped after several unpluggings and plugings. That's the first time it happened to me.

Now the second and last time this happened again was when i opened my side casing to remove some dust(the pc turned off of course),for that i had to disconnect the fan which is on the side of the casing. But after cleaning and when i connected the fan connectors it just turned on the pc by itself(with the blinking light and the black screen).Tried to turn it off by pressing for several secs the power button but nothing,i then removed the power cord and connected it again and it just turned on again by itself but this time i've been able to turn it off by using the power button(kept pressing it for some secs). After that,i pressed the same power button to turn my pc on and it finally came back to normal, working proper;y.

So i would like to know if it's my power supply which is starting to die?By the way my mobo, processor are brand new.But only the power supply is the one thing i didn't change after the upgrade(upgrade because a stupid guy completely damaged my previous mobo by wronlgly installing two sticks of 1Gb DDR400 which of course have been damaged too and are useless now).My processor is a pentium 4 3.0Ghz(cedar mill),Asrock mobo 775i65PE,512 mb DDR333(i know i'm gonna upgrade the memory soon).

Thanks in advance.

Vincent.

hello vincent.
intel pentium 4 cedarmill core can soak up to 115 watts or even more the cpu alone.

it is recommend to use miimu a 450 or 480 psu (branded not generic).

asuming that they only old piece is your psu (size?) normally when a psu is faulty or not enough output your pc can boot or not boot from time to time and if you have case fans or ligthing you can them working low, fan almost not or slow spinnig or maybe some are working others not.

try this just leave plugg cpu, harddrive master drive not slaves or cd-roms and if boot to wins try to get it to full load runnig apps and videos, games etc.. if works fine; then try to do the same but with everything plug in if it takes serverals try to make it work your psu is not big enough.

one last thing the beep you hear did comes fro the mobo bios buzzer or from anyother component??.
because bios beeps due to memory erros, vga errors, or hdd issues not psu.

Hey!Thanks for the quick response. My psu is 450watts and is a branded one.The beep i was talking about is the usual quick and short beep that you can hear when you turn on your pc on(in fact it's a quick beep, which you can hear when details of the mobo, cpu, memory appears quickly on the screen). But this i guess is normal because almost every pc i've seen when turned on,there's this quick beep sound.

Actually,i have 2 fans on my casing(one has a kind of blue light with it),two small fans attached to my hard disk drive to "cool" it,then the light on the front of the casing.

But as i've explained to you,the problem doesn't occur everytime, like now i'm using my pc without any problem. But i forgot to mention that the other day too,i was cleaning again(because where i live, there's a lot of dust in the air and can't do anything about that except cleaning),i was using a kind of small soft paint brush to remove dust inside,i was doing very gently and carefully not to touch other things but by accident it did touch something(maybe some wires or some other things on the board, maybe the graphic card or something else, can't remember exactly, but the part that touch with the inside of the pc was not in metal,it was the end of the brushes which are "hair")and that made the pc turn on automatically(can hear and see all fans on but nothing came on screen,it remained black without any beep and the casing light kept on blinking). But that time i was able to switch it off by just using the power button on the casing. And after that i switched my pc on and it worked properly.

I'm not too knowledgeable like you concerning pc and really when i see problems like this, this drives me nuts because i don't really know where such problem comes from. It's like it needs to be exorcised!!!!

Vincent.

OK even better no need to replace parts ;).

it is very important to clean the dust of your pc i do it twice a month because in my house theres a lot of dust on the air (dont know why).
what you can do is unplug every cable from the back f your case to avoid pulling cables specially monitor vga cable. then unplug everything INSIDE the case and gently with a brush remove the dust or with a hair dryer (cold air ofcourse) blow the dust which is better because you dont have to touch anything.

;)

Thanks a lot Dr.xp,the thought of using a hair dryer never came in my mind, though i always see my wife uses it.I even thought about the vacuum cleaner...hahaha(don't laugh at me)but it's a bit too big and very noisy and can make damage if knock with something inside. But the hair dryer is really a good idea, thanks a lot.I'll use that method as from now.But do you still think that my pc has some kind of problem(psu or mobo or any other thing which may be the cause of the troubles i had earlier?
