Just built up a computer, but it is not detecting my hard drive. Does anyone know what the problem could be. Is my hard drive defective?

windows generally needs a sata driver in order to install. your motherboard should come with one.

windows only needs a driver if you want to run them in a raid mode.

it could need a jumper slide on the back to knock it down to sata 1 if your board wont take sata2, if it does take sata2 in the bios you can select raid or ide mode for the sata ports if you are only using 1 drive select ide mode and then save and exit, go abck into bios and see if its there

but more details like deadcat(the best kind of cat) said realy would be helpful

if he's trying to install a pre-SP2 version of windows xp and isn't loading the drivers at the appropriate time, windows will not see the drive.

Actually the SATA2 drives come with the jumper on it, which means it is set to SATA1. If you want it to work as SATA 2, you have to take the jumper off.

At least it is that way with Seagate SATA 2 hard drives.

Hey - even if the HDD is SATA, the BIOS should detect it, right? (correct me if im wrong)

If the BIOS doesnt detect, probably youve installed it incorrectly (check the JUMPER configuration) or the HDD is defective...

It's an asus a8n sli motherboard, a western digital sata1 hard drive(didn't come with any jumpers on it). I tried installing the drivers but still no luck. I'm beginning to think it's defective

in the bios makes sure that the sata drives are all set to auto(its in the main menu). then go into the advance menu and enter the ide function setup and make sure they are all enabled, then go in to nvraid and make sure thats disabled.then save and exit bios, it will restart, go back in to bios and look at the main sreen if the hdd is there but not in windows it is because it is raw data and needs to be formatted. if its not there and it is plugged in right with working cables its goosed.
