I recently bought a new hard drive for my HP Compaq nx9110 Business Notebook.. I basically fried my other one to the point where it wouldn't format it anymore. So I buy a new drive for it, and it won't recognize it, no matter what I've tried. It says there is no drive installed when I run Windows setup, and my BIOS says there's no IDE device found. It is a Toshiba hard disk, the same model that was in the notebook before. Do I need some sort of boot disk or something for it?

You need to make sure that there is no jumper installed on the drive so the drive goes into 'single drive' mode. Double check your jumper settings for the specific make of your hard drive, and ensure they are set correctly. If they are not, the BIOS will not see the new drive.

The hard drive does not have a jumper on it. I wish I had my old drive to check if that had one on there, but I don't think it did.

That's what I didn't want to hear. Where would be a good place to bring it in for a diagnosis? I don't know if Best Buy would do something like that, maybe a Cyber Works or something? This is the 2nd drive I've tried since the original failed.

@ddp: Are you saying that no 2.5" drives have jumpers, or just most of them dont? Cause I have a 2.5 out of a dell that has jumpers on it that you need to have set correctly before the BIOS will recognize it.

I'm a retard, I must not have noticed I needed a hard drive connector for this laptop, I sold my old drive because it was junk and never noticed the connector on there. I feel pretty stupid, almost brought it in and paid multiple charges for a $5 part.

Ah yes....you need to remember to pull the adapter off the old drive. I ran into the same problem when I put a 2.5" drive in a USB enclosure. Took me a few minutes to fogure it out. Glad you found the problem.

Yeah, i took out the carriage and flipped it over, and i thought to myself, these pins don't even touch the connector, how did i expect it to work? Yeah, good thing I didn't pay 40 bucks for someone to tell me that.
