Rescently, I've been trying to burn DVDs, but it gives me the "Illegal disc" error. CDs burn fine, and for DVDs I'm using media that has worked fine for me in the past. I think it might be the firmware?? If so, can anyone point me in a direction to get more updated firmware? here's the log...thanks:

Hi gDuBxxx
Welcome to aD
Yes your drive could use a firmware update - hopefully this will help with the media you are using (fuji 16x maybe?). Usually the cause of illegal disc error - older firmware w/ newer media.
The latest is 1.0A from 3/2005.
http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/1333

If it doesn't - try and find some 8x media for this drive - made in japan only Sony, Fuji or Maxell. If you can't then go for the 16x Verbatim.

Nero can use an update too - update to 6.6.0.18. Here' some links:
Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2 (recode & vision)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Give that a go and let us know how it goes!

These are poor quality discs, try Verbatim or Sony (made in japan)

Just wanted to say thanks x123412345. I updated everything, and it's all running perfectly now. So, aren't all media made the same way? What makes some better than others aside from the fact that it was made in Japan?

Glad to hear the updates did the trick.

Nope not all media is made the same. Different dyes, dye application, quality control process etc all play into media.
For DVD's made in Japan Sony or Fuji are usually made by Taiyo Yuden - Sony sometimes are made by Sony themselves. Maxell mij is made by Maxell. Verbatim are made by MCC (made in taiwan & the exception).
All use azo dye which is the best and most compatible with drives.
The made in japan just helps you narrow down who the actual manfacturer is to know what your getting.
