I like the BenQ 1655. It does a great job and I get great scores on Nero CD/DVD Speed test for quality scans..... also great scans from DVDInfo Pro. the QSuite that utilizes BenQ drives help keep the drive to improve on it's write strategies for the disks that are being used. With scores of 98% and higher ...... I love my new drive ...... and it also does LightScribe printing! this is what I have:

I recommend the BenQ 1640, 1650, and 1655. I cant recommend them enough, you can also download Qsuite 2.1 to booktype your DVD+R discs to DVD-Rom's for greater compatibility, amongst other things.

all the BenQ drives are internal....... mine just has an enclosure with the Prolific chip set to make it an external! Still a great drive and I highly recommend the BenQ brand.... I use mine to great success!

For an LG I have the 4167B super multi that has also been a good drive, but the BenQ's are better.
I have never owned a NEC drive

The only thing regarding Plextors is that they are more expensive!

NECs rock. However, I recommend getting the Liggy's Bitsetting Firmware 1.06 so it'll bitset single-layer DVD+R.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Hi there,
I have a NEC-3550a (Firmware 1.Y6) and it rocks !
If I had to buy an other one, it would probably be a BenQ 1655 as everyone says.
All I hear is 100% positive on that drive.
BenQ 165x
Nec-3550a
LG-4167B
would be my choice for now :)

Last place I saw that had the 1655 was Meritline and that was last week. They may be gone by now.

Does anybody use this LightScribe technology? It's much advertised, but I doubt that this DVD 'great looking', just b/white picture, plus special expensive media required. Professional looking label can be done only with silk-printing, thermal printing.

yes, that's what I meant - its good only for home use. Silk-printing or thermal printing only what is needed.(most large companies use it to advertise their products on CD-R).
