I recently became interested in the DivX codec. I have the software Video Vault and am looking to rip a lot of my DVD's to DivX so I can keep them on my pc for quick viewing. So, heres my problem. I am totally lost as to were I should start this process. I know I need the DivX codec but after that I am totally lost. I need to know how to either convert a dvd directly to dvd or preferably convert the ripped DVD files to DivX.

If you want to rip a dvd to a DivX or alot of other video types try Imtoo dvd ripper. Great program to rip dvds to avi's mpeg's .etc

DVD Decrypter, DVDFab Decrypter or DVD Shrink for ripping to the hard dive (all freeware).
Mpeg Mediator or Vidomi (both freeware) to convert to DivX.

Thanks for the recommendations. In the meantime I downloaded the latest DivX codec and Dr.DivX and am gonna try my hand at setting the program up and encoding a video. If dissapointed I will take a look at the Vidomi, Imtoo, and Mpeg Mediator programs. Thanks for the help everyone. - Pea

Thanks for the replies everybody. I tried out the software package from the DivX company and it was exactly what I was a looking for. I rip the movie, convert it and then add it to my film library which I can instantly access through the DivX Player. I know that the actual DivX codec is free but for the feature set and ease of use I think the software bundle that is the DivX Bundle includes is well worth the money.
I did try Vidomi and tried to give its Convert and Player functions out but the program crashed each time I went to convert video files to DivX. And the player worked but wasnt as advanced as I would have liked it too be.

Auto GK or Gordian Knot do both DivX and XviD, both programs are freeware and opensourced (i think)

Do u personally use Gordian knot and know a bit about it cause this other gut once recommended it to me i downloaded it and i dnt even know how to use it can u tell me how?..

I once tried Auto GK but had major issues with the audio not lining up with the video. Do you have these issues?

Audio sync problems with AutoGK are generally caused by bad ripping of protected DVD's.

I recommend autogk, its real straight forward and simple, gordian knot is a little more confusing but they both do a great job, and no i dont have problems with the audio. I have auto gk set to recompress audio to CBR 160 kb/s for audio.

http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN. That link is for the tutorial for autogk (easier to use than gordian knot in my opinion). Basically rip the dvd in ifo mode to your hard drive first using DVD Decrypter (my personal preference)then use the tutorial to convert the movie to DivX format. You can set your output file to your likings (keep in mind the smaller the file the more time to convert, and the likelihood of losing quality as well). Try the 700mb setting which I generally use for space and with a fairly decent videocard quality is not bad at all.
Just my opinion hope it helps.
