im a bit of a n00b to ripping and all that. My problem is that my movies end up being way too huge. Ive seen beautiful DVD quality movies at 700 megs, and my movies are almost 1.5 gigs. what can i do?

What did you want to do with the movies? These must be downloaded movies, because a dvd rip would give you a file in excess of 7 gigs. Let us know what you want to do with them before we can tell you what you need to do. If simply putting to disc, all dvd media can handle that size file and more.

I know that. If i want to back up a dvd ill use DVD Decrypter and in this case the size is ok, but if i want to archive a movie i want to fit multiple films onto one disc. I know that its possible to get them down to 700 megs, how is this done?

I'm pretty sure it's the way they are created. A larger file will be better quality than the smaller file, and also can be a different type of file. I've seen .avi at around 700MB, however the same movie in a different format is considerably more. The types of files you have all pretty much as small as they are going to get if you still want them to be playable. And trust me, those movies that are 700MB, are not DVD quality.

What are you converting to? If it's DivX/Xvid you have the choice (through the codec properties) to set the quality and bitrate etc. to what you like. For example, a Home Theater profile with a bitrate of 1500kbps will give you approx. 1GB an hour high quality video. Using the XviD codec through Vidomi at 900 kbps video and 128 kbps audio will give equally high quality at approx. 90 mins. for 650MB.

ill use slither as an example. after ripping with DVD Decrypter to get the vobs, i converted to .avi with magic dvd ripper. i already pushed the settings as low as reasonable, and the resulting file has already began to lose some quality and its 1.73 gigs.

movies that i downloaded for education purposes and have deleted after 24 hours are 700 megs or less and either dvd or almost dvd quality.

what is the duration of the educational videos? Remember a video that is 700Mb and 1 hour long will be 1.5 gigs for 2 long ect... Are the movies are trying now longer in duration than the previous ones?

movies i download are full movies at dvd quality, never over 700 megs. lord of war, munich, fearless, 40 year old virgin are all extremely good quality at 700 megs.
I try to rip and encode into .avi and get files 1.7 gig in size.

so, if I understand... you want to take a file and turn it into .avi and expect it to stay at 700MB? Ain't going to happen. Without getting into detail, that would be like taking a .jpg picture and changing it over to .bmp... never will be the same size. I think you are trying to do two things you can't do. First change a certain type of file into .avi and expect that file to stay the same size, and second.... find a DVD Quality movie @ 700MB. Sorry, it won't come close to DVD Quality, that is the problem with downloading movies, you sacrifice alot of quality.

then why don't you have an abundance of people offering you advice? This is the first time I have seen that someone could not get more than enough advice to solve their problem. But, hey whatever... go enjoy your 700MB dvd quality movies... *snicker*

Download VOB2MPG v2.2 (and Microsoft .NET framework if needed), Vidomi (Video Encoder) and the XviD codec.

Use VOB2MPG to take your vobset and output a single Mpeg. Import the Mpeg into Vidomi (make sure you choose XviD for the encoder in Options>Video Options>Select Video codec Defaults), choose Options>Output Size Options and type 700.

Press Start Encoding.

but you don't want to listen to anything anyone tells you. You will never get far in this forum, usually people are more apt to help people who ask for help when they don't argue about the answers you give them. Yup, I'm the one showing ignorance.

I came here for help admitting im not as good as the regulars of this forum which is surely the case with the majority of people here. But when I get obnoxious replies from someone who thinks hes quite clever when really his responses are laughable and then calls me ignorant i cant help but point the finger.
I dont want to listen to your advice because you sound like youre talking out of your ass but as to anyone elses id be more than grateful.

Try another (freeware) program called Mpeg Mediator. It will use either DivX or XviD as a plugin, and mpeg3 audio as a plugin. If you set the bitrate in XviD settings to 900 you should end up with a decent result. From Mpeg Mediator select your vobset and MM will import them all together

if you want to keep your downloaded movies at 700mg just keep the files in rar format, also these fourms are for talking about movie that we own, also if you downloaded them from a site you could ask the site where you got the movie from, i am sure that with the money that you paid for the movie's that the site would gladley help you with your problem, and if they don't i would not use their service any more and i would cancel my service and ask for my money back, hope that helps happy burning good luck have a nice day

you cant be any more wrong mister i know absolutely eveything.

You can use a program like

#1 DVD Ripper (yes that is the name of the program)
With it you can set the settings to any target file size you want.

By the way those AVI files that are 700 megs are DVD quality.
They are compressed. Not reduced.

The thing is that most dvd players dont play AVI files. But if they are for your computer then they work and play great.
