I recently installed Nero 7.5.1.1 and I use Nero Recode 2 and have started to get lots of "Power Calibration Error" messages and Recode aborts? The only change to my system was the upgrade to the newer Nero version. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hi duke8888
No problems on my end. One thing that can cause power calibration errors is the media and/or firmware of the burner not up to date.

Post your last Nero log that failed and we can take a peek.

You can find it at program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory.
Just be sure to edit your serial # - usually begins w/ 1A,1C or 5C.

Thats what Nero told me was it was my media that was causing it but I used the high quality Sony DVD's that everybody swears on and they seem to be giving me the worse problems. I went and used a crappy COMPUSA DVD and the burn went well no problems. The firmware for my Pioneer DVR-111D is current with 1.23 version of the firmware. I can use all of the low end media and burn with no problems but as soon as I use the high end DVD's they turn into expensive coasters.

When I get the next error log I will attach it.

Thanks for your help.

No problem :)

I've used Sony's - one's either made by Sony themself or Taiyo Yuden - no problems so far. It's one reason Sony's are recommended - the made in Japan can be made by Taiyo Yuden one of the best.

There is a later firmware from September for this drive you may want to try - 1.29. Here's a link:

I just spoke to Pioneer and the version 1.29 hasn't been release yet and it is full of bugs causing discs to be turned into coasters. The 1.29 version will be offically released in two weeks OCT 2006 they claim do not use the version on other sites as it is full of bugs.

Thanks

Hmmm that's interesting that Pioneer said they haven't released it yet.
Seems to be released on their australian site.

That is what I ask them and told them it was on several of their sites and they said it was only the beta release. If you boight an OEM drive not boxed this driver is not universal and is beta. Some of the ts staff has placed it on their sites so that they could get feedback on problems and they should have marked it beta with a disclaimer! Sneaky aye. Let the customers do the work for you.

I have been on VideoHelp site and many people who have switch to this beta firmware have been having problems with their drives. Many are getting different drives? I really like Pioneer drives and they have never given me any problems I own 3 different drives.

Txs for the info duke8888
That's pretty crappy of Pioneer - they should put a disclaimer on it.
I have an older Pioneer that still does a good job - no problems.

What did Pioneer say about the power calibration error? I would think w/ a newer drive like this and using the good media you are this shouldn't be happening.

They said the media was not addressed in the 1.23 version:

Email from TS:

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder. Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). And during the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC). This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times. So, when you receive the "Power Calibration Error" or "Power Calibration Area full" error message, then the cause will be either poor media, poor Power, or a
defective Recorder.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

1) A Firmware Update might enable the OPC on this medium

2) Try another brand of CDR or CDRW media.

3) Also try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If this occurs with an External recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. Take the recorder out of the external chassis, and connect it internal, as a test.

4) Try different configurations, such as taking the CDROM to the Primary IDE bus as Slave, and have only the recorder connected to the Secondary IDE bus as Master.

5) Send the recorder in for Service.
