I have an AVI that needs a bit of shrinking.

Nero Vision Express tells me it is too big (just a
bit too big.)

I have DVD Shrink but it cannot load the AVI file
format, or I don't know the procedure.

Nero recode also could not grab the file.

What's the solution to compressing an AVI and burning
to standard dvd? And is there a guide for it?

Hi lon
Shrink or Recode can't handle avi's - need to be converted to dvd compliant format 1st for them to handle.

Here's some options you might want to try.
Change the 'quality setting' in Vision to 'standard' - quality should still be okay. You could also pick 'high quality' under encoding to try & keep the quality good.

Another option would be to save it to a hard drive folder instead of burning. Then use Recode to reduce it the extra it needs to fit on the disc.

Ok.

First the AVI _is_ a file that's readable in winamp. I was just
in the process of making it's own folder, but I don't know as how
that should matter.

So will recode, if set up as 'standard', be able to
grab the file?

I don't know if the avirecompress prog. is free or a pay-for
one.

Bink, thanks for the response. I see you regularly on my
frequent trips to the Tayo Yuden thread.

Hey lon
Yep love my Taiyo's :) Verb's too.

The standard option is in Vision (under 'more' then 'default video options' - dvd video tab) it may make the file small enuf (uses a lower bit rate) to fit on the disk.

Recode can handle the file once it's converted to a dvd compliant file.
Hope this helps!

Ok, I'm going to check this out...

Does this mean I'll not have to mess with avirecompress?

I got the prog, but it's recompress job went way to fast...
done in a couple of minutes which didn't look right at
all and I got no file output.

Try standard play and see if that will do the trick.
If not just save to the hard drive instead of burning and run those files thru Recode for the little extra compression it needs to fit on the disc.
You won't need to use avirecompress.

Solved.

I was reading the screen prompts about 'this
item will only fit on a DVD-9 dual layer.' But
there is an option for 'long play' which fit it
to the standard dvd. Is that what you meant by
'standard'?

I used my Verbatim dvd+r's to burn to dvd rom
and got decent copies: 95 and 94 on disk quality from
DVD Speed in Nero Express.

Recompressavi is still a nice looking program
and it installs everything you need which I wish was the
case with a lot of the rest of this stuff--
particularly Virtual Dub and all it's versions,
codecs dll's and etc.

Virtual dub works but it needs to be dressed up.

I know it's a lot to ask for freebies but ease of
user interface should be a part of programming regardless.

Ask me about my adventures with Linux. Wait... don't.

;-)

Good to hear you got it solved!

Nero has different video options for quality options. Like long, standard, automatic, extended etc. Depending on the option it will either reduce the bit rate (long, extended) which makes the file size smaller and may affect the quality. Or it will increase the bit rate making the file larger (high quality) to increase the quality.

Now linux - well at least your having adventures :) I keeping saying I'm going to play with it but keep putting it off!
