I am thinking about building/upgrading a new PC and need some suggestions on what hardware to get. I am only wanting to spend about $500-$600, so more than likely I'll just upgrade. these are my

Specs:
motherboard: Aopen ak77-8xn
Processor: AMD Athon XP 2600
Memory: 1.5 GB
HD: Seagate 160 GB
Video: GForce 6600FX 256MB AGP
Sound: SB Audigy2
DVD: LG DVDRW GSA-4166B
CD: Aopen CD-RW CRW5232

I use this PC mainly for gaming, But I do a little Video and Audio editing and building. Any suggestions would be helpful.

well its 665usd but they r well spent

some people r gonna say well just buy a new proc and stick with the old ddr ram and agp card but MY opinion is why stick with something old when u could buy something new or y buy a new motherboard with old tech when u could have a new with newer tech 4 same price

conclusion buy new parts and just stick with ure old case hd, sb, and dvd burner

nissan a good card isnt gonna hurt anybody but his pocket so he said 500-600 so pushing it to 665 is already over his limits unless of course he says otherwise

personally I prefer AMD And NVidia, But I am Open to at least considering the alternatives, although I am hesitant to use a Pentium.

I am getting confused about how they are measuring the speeds of the processors these days. I have always been under the impression that they were measured in gigahertz (the faster the better). I know that my processor is out dated, and the fact that it is 2.13 gigahertz, so why is it that newer processors are so much faster?

well more ghz doesnt determine the speed in these days well a intel core 2 duo runing at 1.86ghz can beat my pentium d overclocked to 4ghz any day what is determining the speed these days is the manufacturing process the core 2 duo is built with 45nm (the lower nm the better) and my pentium d is built on 65nm thats y altough the core 2 duo is clocked at 1.86ghz it can beat my pentium d

also dnt buy amd intel core 2 duo has the lead

Just to make this clear. The new intel processor that is beating every other processor out there isn't the Core Duo or anything. It is the Core 2 Extreme Edition. It is the fastest processor on the market, but costs a cool grand.

@ballyphon
What exactly are your plans? Upgrade? Or new build? And if just upgrading what parts are the most important?

@ PeaInAPod

I have decided that i am going for a Complete Rebuild excluding DVD/CD RWs. I am probably keeping the sound card as I am happy with it, and don't need to hear a pin drop during a firefight (it's a SB Audigy2). Most importantly I would like to Upgrade the Processor, Motherboard, Video Card, and HD. Obviously I am going to go with PCI-e on the video, and would like to upgrade to a SATA HD around 250 Gigs, give or take a few. I currently have an Ultra ATA Drive which I plan to continue using mainly for storage of DVD rips, MP3s and older games that have less of a demand on the system. I would like to build a PC that is easily upgradeable. Also, what would you recommend as far as cooling goes (nothing pricey if possible)? In the past I have had burnouts on Video cards and my system tends to lock up more frequently now than before. I am assuming it is due to high Processor temps for extended periods of time (125°-135°). Other than that I dont need much more. Also, a good low price case. I am guessing that a 450W power supply is sufficient.

i was under the impression that the duo2s where so much faster than there closest competition because they used the 4mb lev2 cache, in a much more efficent way. not because of the manufacturing process i thought that made them more power efficent

if your power suply has 20 pin powerline you might have a problem but some newer mobos have a 8 pin +5v aswell so you realy need to look into that before you buy

Well GHZ dont matter these days, LOL irts the other things like L2 fsb etc the best cpu out now is 2.93ghz but the one with the most ghz i belive is 3.8 or 4.0 but the 2.93 will outpace these massively

Hard Drive: Price 94.99 USD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148140

Video-Card: Price: 215.99 USD (cards from eVGA include a full liftime warranty, as do BFG videocards. I dont recommend any other)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130056

Mother-Board: Price 104.99 USD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131517

Processor: Price 70.00 USD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103535

I chose a socket 939 proc./mobo because if you currently have ddr ram you can still use it and these parts while not the newest of the new are still high-end parts.

@PeaInAPod

I do appreciate the time you spent looking up parts for me. I have decided that I am definitely going for a major rebuild. At the current time I have mismatch RAM and and fear that my system is to far outdated to attempt to use any existing hardware with a rebuild except my current drives and sound card. TY again for taking the time to suggest hardware.

I also have a few questions.

1. What is the difference between Buffered and unbuffered RAM?

2. How much difference does a Dual core processor make on a Game that is designed for a single core processor?

3. what would be a good heat sink to get for
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115004 ?

4. Is PhysX worth it?

Any other suggestions would be helpful.

also have a few questions.
@Ballyphon

For your questions....

1. I have no idea what buffered and unbuffered mean, and if theres a
difference between them.

2. Since most apps/games your purchase won't be written to multi-thread (that is use both cores) the difference between a dual core and a single core cpu isn't noticeable. However single core apps do run faster on single core cpu's and dual core apps do run faster on dual core cpu's.

3. When I went to see what type of cpu you wanted a heat-stink for I saw that that part was discontinued. Can you tell me what socket type it was and what model?

4. An about the Physx Chip until the games take more advantage of the technology/the technology matures I would stay away from it. Ive seen it and the effects it makes are in my opinion over-rated and not worth the money.

AND for your ram the motherboard manual should list some specific brands/models #'s that are recommended for that board.

Any more questions? :)

Physx will be worth in the next year or so currently only a little number of games support it
