First of all, I have read a lot of threads about this subject and honestly, none of the methods have worked.
My problem is the following: I have a avi-file of 700 MB, I would like to watch this movie on my standalone DVD-player.
So, I used Sonic MyDVD and tried to burn it as a DVD, but the file gets blown up to 10GB???? I decided to try Ulead DVD WOrkshop, same problem. THen, I discovered your forums and guides. So, I converted it to .MPEG and I demultiplexed it into .m2v and .mpa. Then, I converted these two files with IFOEdit and butned the result with DVD-decrypter. But when I watch it on my TV (PAL) I get a strange-coloured border underneath the movie. My question is, how do I get this border off the screen? I also have DVDPatcher so, If you could give me the right stats I have to fill in for PAL, I would be very graceful. If you know any other method, don't hesitate to tell me.

I think MyDVD should be renamed to MyBigDVDfiles.

Not sure what the 'strange coloured border' could be... Do you see the border when playing back the video stream on the PC?

You're very graceful. :-)

Rgds,
jnihil.

Actually, the border under the movie is a a border from the starting screen of my DVD-player. I really don't know what to do, I've been trying for weeks now.

In the treath you named Oriphus, there is no sound, I don't have that problem, my problem is explained in the first post.

Anyway, thanks for the responses, but could someone get me out of my misery?

Well, I see the lower part of the word DVD (the lower part of the screen I get when I turn on my DVD-player without a disc)

Huh? So maybe your DVD player is having weird trouble with the playback? Try re-authoring with another software other than IFOEdit.

For movies like that I have used ULEAD DVD Workshop to make the VOB's on the harddrive and use a program like DVD2One or DVD Shrink to make it fit on one disk.

Selecting the quality is up to personal preference: Are you willing to give a lot more time (perhaps overnight) for a gain in quality.
As for the color border, my best guess would be that the AVI file you converted from was in NTSC resolution - as PAL has 576 line sof vertical resolution and NTSC 480, the extra 96 lines are probably showing up as a color band.
Never having used Sonic MyDVD, I can't give much more input than that. Maybe there is a "video arrange" option (likne in TMPGENC) or a resizing option somewhere in the conversion settings?

Yuriv, are you sugesting that I have t convert the AVI file to PAL first? Can I just do this with DVDPatcher?

Like I said, I have never used Sonic MyDVD before, and I am only speculating that the resolution difference could be causing the color band.
You could try using TMPGEnc to do a trial encode of a smaller portion (use source range to do this) and see if it turns out the same. Select PAL DVD in the templates section and then go to "video arrange" and select "maintain aspect ratio."
Good luck...

Enricos,

I have been recently learning how to convert PAL to NTSC and have come to realize this process, although not totally impossible, has it difficulties.

First there are a few things you need to determine about your .AVI file.
1) Is the file truly PAL or is it NTSC? (25 frames/sec. = PAL; 23 or 29 = NTSC)
2) What is the aspect ratio 4:3 or 16:9?
3) What is the resolution? (352x576,720x480 ?)
4) Is this a file of a movie or of a TV show? (try http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm)
5) What is the current compression type of the file? (most likely Divx)
This information helps determine the settings that will be needed for any conversions to your format and how complex the conversion will be.

Without knowing the source information of your .AVI file you will be shooting in the dark with your conversion to DVD. Also once you determine the steps required to do the conversion you may decided it?s easier to just watch the clip on your PC.

Once you have this information we can go from there.

Thanks for all your responses. But right now I'm quite busy. I've used Bobiroc's technique to make the VOB's. When I try to play the movie with my DVD-player, it says BAD DISC. Is this because I used a menu and compressed it?
