When I built my first pc I didn't have a clue either.
There are loads of good pc building guides on the internet, just google for it and take your pick.
Thats what I did.

on that size of buget your best bet is to get an amd 939 athlon x2 bundle and a mid range card like a 7600 gt or 1800gto. try pricegrabber or somthing like to fing the best prices.

you will want a pci-e mobo and 1gb of ram and most games will run great

yes it will go nicely but that gcard sucks this would be better at that price,

http://www.directron.com/pvt42eude3op.html

or for a little bit more

http://www.directron.com/pvt73guge3.html

im asuming your using the case, psu, hard disk and disk drive from old pc. you will need a compatable cpu id go for the pentium d 805 in that board, you might also nedd to upgrade your psu try this to find out how much power you will need

a case(should be able to use old one if les than 8 years old) a cpu, kboard and mouse if your older ones are serial and a dvd drive new games use them more and more plus all you mentioned above.

mine is a sempron 3400(754)
asrock k8nf4g mobo
2 x 512 ram
asus 7600gt
450w psu
2x250gb spinpoints
toshiba dl dvdrw

it was cheap in total it has cost me just under £400(plus screen, kboard, mouse, speakers, printer) i can play all the latset games with all the eye candy turned on at a resolution of 1200/1000(fear quake4 oblivion) with playable framrates all the time.

to play games you need min
1 gig ram
newish graphics card
and a cpu faster than 2 gig
the rest realy is upto your budget

how about this? $406
mobo $55
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813130542
cpu $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103633R
ram x 2 $100
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820161674
gcard $141
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681415018
psu $30
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817138002

it wont set any world records with it performance but it will play games and all the other more mudane stuff a pc does, plus it would give the option to add newwer componants to it in the future, because am2 is amds new socket and it will be supported for quite some time to come

Core 2 Duo E6600
Basic Mobo (has to support Core 2 Duo, DDR2 and PCI-E)
1 BG DDR2 RAM
Basic HDD
And 7900GT

DONT GO SLI! 200% of the money,120% PERFORMANCE. If you have spare $$$ lying around, invest in the stock market =]. Nah just kidding. Go for a better SINGLE graphics card or a nice cool case that can light up and do the hula.

could swap these for the ones above
mobo $50
link below (nice spot nissan)
cpu $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116001

but this would take you up to $416. i was trying to get it as close to your budget as i could, thats why i went single core but this is a good cpu for its price.

if you shop around you can get them cheaper i did it all on newegg as its easier to give you a ballpark figure, and an idea of the kind of system you can get for that kind of money. this board is not as good as the first (link) one you mentioned at the top of the page but you get what you pay for
