Liteon 5045 - hard drive wiped after freezing

My Liteon 5045 has being playing up recently & has now been really bad. It wouldn't split some recordings & wouldn't play others, both causing it to freeze. I then had to switch it off & on at the mains.
As a precaution, I copied the 5045 hard drive to a blank hard drive on my computer (copied & pasted the complete folder/file structure) to be kept as a backup until I had copied all the recordings on the 5045 hard drive to DVD. I was then going to format the 5045 hard drive & delete the backup on the computer.
BUT...!!! Yesterday the 5045 locked up three times & when I switched it on after that, it had erased the hard drive - everything was gone.
I have the backup and can play the content files - they have no file extension, but adding any video extention makes them playable - but a lot of the progs which were whole when played on the 5045 are split up on the hard drive & I want them transferred back to the 5045 hard drive if possible. I would also have my thumbnails pics, recording dates & files names restored.
Because the Liteon hard drive is formatted in a special way, copying the files back to it from the computer won't work in the normal way, but is there any way of doing this?
One other thing - the recordings the 5045 wouldn't play do play on my PC. Why is that?
