Ok ive been reading through a bunch of threads about speeds and ports and routers and all...and im still not any better for it. Im using Azureus on a dsl modem by westell...i opened my ports in windows xp 6881-6889...both tcp and udp. Nothing happened. Download speeds are still around 10k tops...while my uploads have hit as high as 50. That doesnt make sense to me...if i can send out files at 50...why cant i take em in at that? I changed my port in the Azureus program to 6888..dont know why...just did...no difference. I shut off windows firewall...plus ZoneAlarm that i have on top of that...still no difference. I even tried to forward to my router...even though i dont have one...i have a modem for dsl...but im not on a network. When i did that it asked for a name and password and i tried admin and couldnt get thru...so im at a loss here. Im brand spanking new to this...so any help plz keep to lamen terms...lol
Thanx all
First off, running 2 firewalls at the same time is ALWAYS bad, so only use either Zone Alarm or winblows firewall.
Second, try looking through the countless other posts about Azureus speed problems, i'm sure you'll find your answer if you use your brains and a little trial and error.
i have been...looking that is...and they always talk about routers...which i dont have...and lynsys something....and different ports...and number ###-#### ports...on aurues you can only choose one port and it says nat error when tested...i looked up reports on that error and it says open the ports...which i did...and forward em to the router...which im not using. Am i missing something or do people consider routers and modems one and the same all of a sudden. And even if that was true...i can access my modem anyway...so i think im up poops creek then huh...lol
ok i finally got into my modem and forwarded my ports of 6881-6889. Imusing port 6884 atm and no nat error. Good. But i still have very slow speed...0-5kbs...and the bubble next to dht firewalled is orange.any help with that...or does that have nothing to do with speed. I have windows firewall off atm if that helps.
If you would have done some proper reading, you'r realise there's no way to guaranteed speeds on torrents, because there's more to it than just YOUR connection.
Do some more reading on seeds and peers/leechers.
Also, do yourself a favor, and download the BT Bible, posted here by our resident networking genius TomMelee.
If that doesn't clarify things, then nothing will.
Also, read the safety and privacy guide by Rav009 here And last, but most certainly not least, disable DHT in Azureus.
Thanks for the props, now I've gotta work on being a genius...
In other news, I've been doing some really need stuff recently, and I've been considering tossing together some new tutorials on some productivity-type hacks and tweaks. Anybody think they'd be interested?
/thread hijack off.
And as for helping shadowian...let's sort some things out really fast.
1. Is there more than one place for you to plug in a computer on the back of your DSL modem? If so,it's got a router.
2. Does it have an antenna? If so, it's got a router.
3. Pick a new port. I choose 16881 for you.
4. If you went to 192.168.1.100 or something similar and got prompted for a password, most likely, you have a router.
But, for starters, DO grab the BT bible from either the first link in my sig or Fiend's link there. Look at points 1-4 above and post back. Tell us if you've got green smiley faces or yellow or red frowny faces in Azureus (at the bottom--not on the individual torrents.) Tell us from where you are dling a torrent, maybe you've got a crappy one.
Hmm...methinks I'll write a question-format post and ask someone to sticky it.
thanx tom and everyone else..like i said previously i have been reading...and reading...and reading some more...lol. I changed my port again cause after a while of downloading it went to a nat arror again. Now its fine. I somehow also fixed the firewall issue i had right next to the nat bubble. All it says now is the amount of people online. Then after i got that done...something new turned up. I have a ratio problem. I started off as yellow...but now im red. I went to the official site there and read all i could on ratio aspects and changed my settings for a person who shares more than he takes. I know i hate finally finding what im looking for ...just to find out i cant download it cause nobody who has it is on. Like i game ive been searching for...romance of the three kingdoms x...for pc...cant find that one anywhere...in bt..emile..ares...or limewire...lol. And yes i have all of em...lol. Im thinking my ratio problem is due to the fact that i have yet to actually finish a download yet. Im downing a season of SG1 and still have a whole day if not more left. But i could be wrong on that. But anyway thanx for the help...and if anyone knows a site that has the torrent for rotk x ...let me know!!! lmao
Later all
:-)
Your woes are pretty common. Try to get memberships to some private trackers like (my personal faves), filelist.org, bitsoup.org, and demonoid.com. They're more likely to have good seeders because everyone has to maintain a ratio to stay a member.
One last resource--I saw a link to this site over at lifehacker, and I don't know how I lived so long w/o it. Check it out, it's a tracker indexer, a great big search engine.

Feel free to kill that link if it's not allowed one of youz mods, it's questionable, but it doesn't link to any material, so I don't think it violates any rules.
