Ok I just put in a new dvd burner rom, and 512 ddr ram, and my computer still reads as 240 ram. And now my computer doesnt even show that I have a dvd rom in there, or even the one that came with the computer that is still there. I plugged everything in correctly.
I went to the hardware manager to search for deviced, and ti doesnt show it. Please help ! !

try the new ram by it self to see if computer posts or not. are both rom drives on same cable? if yes than are they set as master & slave by the jumper at the back of the drive or what?

more info (mobo type, ram type) would be helpful, but some boards and amd semprons dont like dual sided ram, your board might not take ddr400 ram (im asuming thats what you've bought) it might only take ddr333 or ddr266 ram, or it might just be a dud module? just guess's.
ddp's right but you might also need to go into your bios, so that the pc uses both connections on the ide cable, and so that it detects the drive

Ok turns out I bought ddr2, and mine is just ddr. So it didnt fit, But I connected the new rom to the plugs that were in the original, and it worked. But when I have them both connected neither work, and yes its through one wide thin connector.
Anyone have a suggestion for a cheap ddr that would be good for my computer ?? I dont want to buy the wrong one, and the board for the ram says intel on it in places. Im looking to spend 60 max.

You need to set your one of your drives to master and the other to slave its a little plastic head at the back of the drive which you put one one of the 3 sets of 3pins

To make everything easier on your motherboad is there an empty IDE socket if so get another IDE cable and plug the dvd drive through its on IDE therefore you wont have to swithc it to slave which looks like you are finding a bit difficult
