I have a TDK model AID+440N DVD R/W drive that has suddenly stopped recognizing blank DVD media...all types. Last month it labeled all Maxcell DVDs as illegal.

Couldn't find any firmware updates on the TDK site, which is my first guess to fix this. Is there such? It was bought in 2003, so I wouldn't think it's too very old.

Any suggestions?

Hi HazelB
Not too very old to us but in dvd writer terms yeah it is.
Looks like the max write speed on this drive is 4x and the last firmware support was from 2004.
So newer media will give it problems.

Me - I'd get a new 16x drive. Good ones are pretty cheap now a days.

I thought maybe so...

thinking of a Pioneer 111D or 111 - what's the difference?

or a NEC 35550a

or a Plexor 750A if I can find it

What's new?

The diff in the Pioneer is the 111 writes to DVD-Ram the 111D doesn't - no biggie.

NEC is a good drive too.
For the Plextor look at the 755a or 760a - these are actually made by Plextor.

Throw LiteOn SHW-160PS6 in the mix too.

All are newer drives.

Hi, and thanks for the info & suggestions.

Can't find a Lite-On 160P[i]S6[i], only a [i]6S[i]

I found the Lite-On SHW 160P6S05-OEM and the 160P6S6-04, are they what you meant? What's the difference, if there is one?

I like what I see.

Sorry there HazelB - transposed the #/letter.

The 05 is the oem - meaning you just get the drive only.
The 04 is the retail and it will come with like a Nero oem, power dvd (I think0 and an audio cable.
If you in the US check out newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...ENE&N=0&Ntk=all
Right now there are both the same price so you might as well get the retail one.

LiteOn is a great drive - been using them for about 3 years. Though Plextor is the king of burners.
