Please could you give us your budget or maximum price range.
What you intend to use the laptop for.

Whether, it's just for internet, general pc use, wlan/networking, etc.
If it's for gaming then you're looking at some serious bucks.

I don't know if you have any computer building experience but have you considered a barebones laptop system where you can choose what cpu, ram etc to install yourself?

For CPU I would recommend an AMD based system as they seem to run far cooler in laptops than INTEL. AMD Turions are far better than Semprons. Turions have better cache/speed. However, INTEL has the upper hand when it comes to battery life.

So I guess its a trade off between processing power and battery life.

Minimum RAM 512mb (min. 1gb for gaming) pref. DDR = should be upgradeable to >2gbs

CPU minimum 1.6ghz

Hard Drive minimum of 80gb > 5400RPM

Screen size minimum 14"

Average battery life depends on manf. but allow at least < 1hr. i.e if they state it lasts for 4 hrs its probably nearer 3 hrs.

BEWARE - some laptops say that they are wifi enabled - this does not mean that they have an installed wireless card. So check this out.

Acer seem a good choice for budget laptops. Personally I would not recommend a Dell as they are bloated with needless software and poor recovery options installed on a partition on the hard drive.

There are a lot of laptops that now use windows media centre. I don't know what OS you are considering/prefer.

Have a look at http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=32

or

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...lc.asp?CatId=17

Perhaps then someone will give you more advice on specific products you are interested in.

Hope this helps.

How new of games do you want to play on it? you could try looking at www.cyberpowerpc.com they have laptops you can configure to get an idea on how much you can look to spend.

I would go for Toshiba and then HP and then Acer in that order i would not go for the others.

Thats just from me guessing without seeing specs.

Compaq's Are good while they last, They start slowing up, and after about a year they become; Obselete. Gateway?? I didn't even know they were still around... (I haven't been in the US for 2 years) I wouldn't go them at all.

for 800$ you can build a system thats twice as fast as a laptop and highly upgradeable, you can forget playing new games on a system under under 1200 even then it wil be shoty, but you can get WOW to barely run on a basic gaming 800$ laptop.
