Just discoverd that I can no longer burn DVD-R media on both my drives. It seems that I can now only burn DVD-RW type media.

I have 2 totally separate DVDRW drives and both used to be able to record on any type of media. Now every time I put in a DVD-R disk, both Roxio and Nero error out. Nero says I have an illegal disk error!! If you put in a DVDRW disk, all seems fine.

Its like windows has locked both drives so that I can only record DVDRDW media. Does anyone have ANY idea of what would cause this strange situation or how to unlock these drives so I can again record on DVD-R media.

I know its not a firmware issue since one of the drives is USB and the other is built into my Dell computer. Any help would be appreciated.

If you're using junk media that'll cause things like this. Read my sig on that.

If you are using good media, let me know and we'll take it from there.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

it is a known fact that Roxio and Nero clash and the results are bad for DVD burning..... delete one or the other....... I tend to like Nero better than Roxio..... most member lean that way, too. Here is Roxio zapper that takes out all traces of Roxio once you uninstall it: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Im using the same media that I have been using for many years...either sony, maxell or memorex! As far as both Nero and roxio on the same machine, I have used them both on my computer for years with no problems.

Nothing has changed but the fact that I can not write to the DVD-R media and I could before.

Thanks

don't take my advise.... what do I know? I'm only telling you that Roxio and Nero clash....... that's a fact....... if it doesn't for you..... so be it. but now you have problems. Ok..... use better media than Memorex and stick to the Made in Japan rule.... Look on the label and make sure it says Made in Japan for the best media you can buy. Those Memorex media is crap.... and eventually your player won't read them. I have old Memorex that the manufacturers code is RICOHJPN... which is second rate media and is acceptable. But now Memorex is mostly CMC MAGs and they are the worst media around. here is a media guide for you:

read and learn what's best out there.

Things change even when you don't realize it. That's the world of computers, of digital life. Roxio and Nero may have gotten along fine for years but for some reason now don't, especially if some new Windows update or patch got installed.

A big problem is your media. If you think the brands you are using are consistent, stick around here for awhile and you'll see. All source their discs from different disc manufacturers. Memorex, especially, can change from lot-to-lot and store-to-store. I used to swear by Memorex, but I've seen one batch sold at one store code out as Ritek while the same stuff from a store down the road code as CMC. (Both are junk, BTW). What Memorex and most other retail brands do is buy discs from one of many cheap manufacturers and slap their name on it. It is by no means consistent - or quality.
