Hi guys
I am very new to this. I just bought a Dell 8200 with a DVD+RW drive. I dont have it yet cause its being shipped so I dont know what brand it is but I would like to buy some blank dvd disks so I can do some burning when I receive it.
My question is, do I need to buy DVD+RW disks or can I just buy DVD-R disks? Also, I understand that DVD+RW is better since more dvd players support it, but what are the negatives of having DVD+RW drive as opposed to a DVD-r for example? Also if there's any other positives about it that i'm not aware of.
Thank you

Although I am new to this. I am certain that you will have to use "+" discs.

DVD-R and DVD+R(W) should be equally supported by DVD players. The "dash version" of writable DVDs has one big advantage over "plus camp" -- "dash" discs cost significantly less.

>>> - "dash" discs cost significantly less.
Unbranded DVD-R discs cost less. Branded DVD-R and DVD+R have similar prices

Actually, the dvd-rw and dvd-r media are more compatible than the dvd+rw media. The Dell drive will likely be a Phillips drive and will not likely be able to use dvd+r media. The dvd-r media and dvd-rw media will definately not work.

Yaron, see the reply I put up re- common DVD on the market.
If you believe the hype (hmmm) then DVD+RW or DVD+R is meant to offer better compatibility with top box players. If you try what I suggest in my other post then you might find that you can play your DVD+R in other top boxes.
Warrendj, in answer to your question, a DVD+RW burner will only work with DVD+RW disks (or DVD+R) as already said :)

Thanks unfortunatrly I have a Sony not an HP.
Will visit their web site and send e-mail to their Tech/Suppport people to see if they have anything to add, that is if they even reply.
But a dual writer would be the ideal thing.

DVD-R allows to record only once, while DVD-RW implies that you can rewrite more then once. Also if you intend to play DVDs in a DVD-ROM (deck), you should know that it is better to record DVDs using the DVD-R disks, because they enjoy better compatibility with DVD-ROMs. DVD RW should be fine for any other storage purposes, such as MP3s, games, etc.
Hope that helps

I have a HP DVD200i drive. It can burn DVD+RW and DVD+R. The DVD+RW media is not as compatible as DVD-R media (not even close), but the DVD+R media is very compatible. In fact, I've yet to find a player that won't play the Memorex DVD+R media I've been using.

I bought a BusLink DVD burner. It supports DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W. I tried burning a DVD-video (using both Nero and NeoDVD), NTSC, on DVD+R/W disks. My Sony DVP-S330 supposedly reads +R/Ws according to the compatibility site. But it won't recognize the disk at all. (My PC does, though). Any ideas what to try? I'm using expensive Memorex DVD+R/W disks. This is frustrating. And expensive. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Are you using the newest Nero down load. I had troubles in recognition and Nero sent a patch to recognise my Sony +RW but the latest download incorporates that patch.
Regards.

You'll need either DVD+R or DVD+RW disks. The -R and -RW are different formats. Unless of course your drive actually supports all of them. Hope this helps. Oh, don't make the mistake I made. Buy one (1) and try it before you buy a 10-pack. You may find that your set top DVD player doesn't read them anyway.
