Old IDE hd and profiles

My old PC recently died and I've replaced it. Only to find out the the old IDE HD is not compatible with the new PC. I've purchased a "Firewire hard drive enclosure" I love it it has allowed me to get some very important files off of the old drive.
However I still have some document files that were part of a profile that when I go into the Documents and settings I recieve an error message telling me that I cannot acess those files. There has to be some way to get around this, please help?

Im not sure if this would work... maybe you could try changing the file and folder permissions on the hard drive to full control under your current user or admin account. That is if your OS is xp pro. not sure about home ed.

ddp: Safemode? I'm not sure how to do that with this drive. The new PC is not booting up from the old drive. Unless their is some way to tell it to on the initial bootup?
FartDude: I was thinking about that just did not know how to say it. Or how to do it. OS is XP home

Come on nobody has faced this issue before?
Let me try to be a bit specific. The new PC recognizes the old HD as a removeable drive. I can access most files without any problems. The issue comes when trying to get into the "Documents and Settings" for any of the previous profiles. Error message something to the effect of "Not accesible. Access denied, or write protected." This is however where I had some family pictures, word docs, ppt. that I really would like to recover.
How can I bypass this? I'm concerned that if I try to boot the PC from the old HD that the OS on that disk may take a look at all of the new hardware and lock up or blue screen me all together.
If I copy the contents of the disk over to the new PC's HD using the "xcopy" command would that get me around this?
I know that someone has the answer to my question, come on people I need your help

Erm just an idea. Get something like Acronis migrate and use the 15 day free trial. Then just "migrate" that harddrive over to a sepreate partition on your new one. Thus youl have your old computer with everything on it stored safely on your working harddrive?
Just an idea. Although if its a permissions error then that might be a problem for the app aswell! Worth a shot though!

here is an article on how to set view and change folder permissions in windows xp, i think this can be done in home edition as well.

Sorry i forgot to mention that you need to creat a new partition on your main HDD before you can copy tye partition from your old HDD to the newly created partition on your maid HDD.

No matter where you copy the partition as long as the Windows OS files are on it, they will prevent you from opening those files/folders. Delete Windows from your spare drive and the file restrictions should be gone, if that doesnt work or you are unwilling to delete Windows then look into downloading a Live CD, I have used MiniPE to do exactly what you have asked and it worked perfectly.
I have also heard that Hirens boot CD is good as well.

OK so youre right.
So the problem exists in the windows OS itself. Maybe theres a corrupted system file? Who knows? Repair your current windows and try again. If not, fiddle around with your OS permissions and maybe you can get access.

The problem isnt in his current Windows install, its in the one on his spare HDD, It is that Windows that locks the files from outside access, cant remember the specifics but i did find alot of info when doing my own file recovery from my other computers HDD when it (the computer) crapped out.
But yeah MINIPE will bypass the windows lock, and allow access to ALL files.

Ok, I guess I'm willing to try anything at this point. But I need someone to hold my hand during this process.
How would I go about using something like MiniPE? What are the risks involved with using something like this?
I thought about trying to get the new PC to start up from the old hd as it is recognized as a hd. Then I could simply change the settings. But I'm afraid that it would notice that it has all new hardware around it and then give me the dreaded blue screen. Would this be possible? I'm really at a loss here.

You could go into BIOS settings at startup and change the boot drive to your external one.
MINIPE doesnt really have any risks, its boot CD that doesnt need to install anything to run, PE meaning preinstallation environment. Everything is run from the CD but because is comes with loads of pirated software you would need to find it on a torrent site, think i got mine of thepiratebay.org but im not sure.
Try setting your other HDD to bot first, though will save lots of time if it works.

run 'getdataback' from www.runtime.org it will read encrypted files and let you transfer them to a new drive
the program was meant for rescueing data from old corrupted drives but works for this as well

How do I use a torrent file? I think I would like to try to use MiniPE, first for monetary reasons. How should I download the file and load it onto a disk?

have you found a torrent of it with seeders? open the .torrent file you got from a website with something like utorrent and wait for it to download, think its about 260mb.
