Cannot Convert my VOB files

Hi;

I am new to this forum and have a question.

I converted a bunch of home movies to DVD using a standard DVD Recorder (pioneer).
Judging by the format in the directory of each DVD (it has Video_TS folder and VTS_nn_1.VOB files) I am assuming it is MPEG2 format.
For the longest time, I could not get any audio when I played the DVD. I knew it had something to do with codec.
I downloaded klmcodec159 and installed the latest.
the two main players (Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic) got corrected and I could hear the audio.
Now, I want to edit my home movies. I have two options:
1- Covert the VOB files to mpg or AVI or any format that Windows Movie Maker accepts and use Movie Maker to edit them.
2- Use an editor that can read the VOB file as it is and allow me to edit and save my clips.

I have been trying option one. But any converter that I install cannot play my audios. DVD Shrink was the latest.

Any suggestions?
