Computer won't boot when memory is placed in second dimm slot

I have 512mb PC3200 in my first dimm slot and my computer has ran fine for years. Yesterday i bought another stick of 512mb PC3200 and placed it in the second dimm slot. When i boot up the comp, it fails to load. There is no video on the screen but the computer seems to be booting up but I can't see the progress. To make sure the memory wasn't the issue i took out both sticks and placed the recently purcharsed RAM into the first dimm slot. The computer booted up fine. So the memory works but there is obviously something wrong with my second dimm slot. At this point i am not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

well you said that the computer has been running fine for years. i would say build a new computer or replace the motherboard cause the Dimm Slot sounds like it isnt working.

The computer is only two years old. It's not old enough to start over.
AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1800mhz
Bios: Phoenix - AwardBios v6.00PG
Memory: 512mb PC3200
Video: Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT
I have never tried the second slot until now so chances are i would've ran into this problem when i first got it. I'm thinking there is another answer then to trash it and start over. I read on some other forums that people updated their bios and the computer could then read the ram. What do you guys think? Thanks Rogeball for the response!

Hey,
That computer is pretty decent for everyday apps so trashing over doesnt seem necessary. You have a few options:
1) Take the ram stick back. Sell your old one om ebay and buy a 1gb stick of KNOWN COMPATABLE and bung it in the first slot!
2)Update the bios see if that helps. It can help and im sure it has resolves a few issues.
Also when you say it fails to load what exactly do you mean? Does it post? If it does click del or f2 in some cases as the post screen and see if it is reading off the ram being there or not!
Anyways get back to us with any new info!

When it fails to load, the computer loads as it normally would (or so it seems) but there is no display on the monitor. There is no beeping from memory error, it just turns on, seems to be booting up but no display. Removing the memory stick in the second dimm slot brings the display back. Just from observing the the computer tower i can't tell a difference between the way the computer loads except their is no display when using the second dimm slot.
Does that make sense? Also, updating the bios might fix the problem but i hear that can be risky. I don't want to mess anything up but i also hear that can fix the problem. What do you think? If this is the best option how would i go about doing this? Thanks Again!

this is a common problem i had the same one a while back. its a socket 754 board? yes. and your new ram is dualsided? yes. take it back and get single sided ram and it will work.

if its 939 try dropping both modules to 166mhz instead of 200mhz in your bios

my mobo is socket 939. The ram that came with my computer is actually dualsided and the recently purchased ram is only one sided. Does that mean the ram is incompatible with eachother?
How would i go about changing the modules mhz in the bios? I'm making some progress here...thanks ALOT!

the dual sided thing was one of the problems they fixxed with socket 939.
but im not sure if the 2 types will work together.to find out you could try this, if it doesnt swap the new one so they match.
when you first turn your pc on during the post screen you press del or f2 to enter bios. in bios it is normaly under advanced options. you use the cursors to move, enter and esc are the accept and cancel buttons. if you have a look around you should find it in there, just dont go changing things that if you dont know what they do. if you find something in there and you want to know what it is come back here and ask. it will be somthing like ram frequencys and it will give you 3 choices 133mhz, 166mzh and 200mhz, drop them both to 166 and see if it will boot like that.

my dfi nf3 ultra hates my 433 MHZ ramm and my 333 cosiar vaule ramm all that runs in it is 2 256 of odd off brand ramm,if you can boot it up run mem test for a few hours
gaaa I dotn want to but I need to get 1-2GB of soem good ramm,I know its a old mobo but crap I dont plan on updating for 2 years at least and I have a 6800OC GT BFG vid card its sturdy enouh.

I dropped them both to 166mhz and is still failing to boot. Another thing, I placed ram in the second dimm slot only to see if it would boot that way and it didnt. If only using one slot, does the ram have to be in the first slot?
In the BIOS i noticed "1T/2T Memory Timing" in which i have the options "Auto, 1T,2T." Could this have anything to do with it?
Also, in the "Max Memclock (Mhz)" i don't have 200mhz as an option. The options are "auto, 100, 133, 166." Thanks again for your help...I'm making some progress:-)

DO you see a fail safe option anywhere in the bios?
sometimes my XPSP1 drivers or soemthign goes funky and even safe mode wont boot so I run safe mode and 70% of the time I can get into safe mode and patch windose without having to overhaul it.
also I would suggest rising your timing on the ram by 1 that might can help as well.
MMMMmmmm I need to know the mobo before I can find more info,do you know the brand of the mobo?

I have SP2 and i can't get to safe mode or anything with both sticks of ram in. How would booting into safe mode fix the problem? New windows updates would help my computer read the ram? If so just tell me where to go.

Its not windose ,least I dont think it would be SP2 is a btch and I hate it but it only seems to hate lesser devises not mobos HDs and DVD/CD drives (it dose hate some older programs,printers,modems,ect,ect,ect *L*)
I simply don't use SP2 but thats my problem I have trouble shooted SP2 enough to know a few things tho.
Anyway I need to know the mobo and name of the ram you are useing and any timeing nfo (2-2-2-4/3-3-3-7 ,ect,ecte,ct) you have on them.
Have you tried placing the nw ram in where the old ramm was?
and then puttign the old ram into the never used ram slots?
SOem mobos have dual ram types insted of haveing all 4 do 166 or 200Mhz ramm one set can do 100 and the other 166 or 166 and 200 and so on.

I found this information out using Everest Home Edition.
Both stick of Ram work in the first Dimm slot, only when i try and use both of them together do i run into problems.

the max memlock is so you can put a cap on your ram and 200mhz is with out any limit.
i now think that its your board that does not like running the mix of dual/single sided ram.
if i was you i would take it back and swap it for some like the ram you already have.

I also have a 939 m/b running 2+Gb of ram u must only run ddr ram and they need to be in the right slots.u have 4 slots and they are number 1324 first ram slot 1 secound ram slot 3.These slots have colour clips .
slot 1 white clips ,slot 2 black ,slot 3 white ,slot4 black.Your rams must be in the white clip slots or your pc wont boot .I had the same prob,the tec at the pc store changed my ram to its right slot .hope this helps.Your ram must be the same either 2 330 or 400 if you mix, a 330 and a 400 your pc will run only at 330.

sounds liek you need to set your mem timings to match the highest numbers of the ramm,most of the time a ram stick can run on higher values but will become crappy on lower values.

No. Even though there are systems that support both technologies, you can't have DDR and SDRAM in the same system at the same time. You'll have to choose one or the other. more info at this site.
