I had a Hitachi 51S500 rear projection HDTV that went out on me.

Had it for 3 years. Luckily I got it at C*rcuit C*ty & purchased the
Advantage Protection Plan.

I've waited for about 2 months now for the parts to come in from Hitachi, to fix the set. The TV repair people told me to call C.C. & see if I could just get an exchange.

I called CC & it looks like they will give me Store Credit( which is totally fine w/ me. Since the TV I had is no longer sold by them)

I'm looking to get the Sony KDS50A2000 rear projecton LCD...

What really suprised me is that there aren't many TV's anymore that have P-I-P ?

I used it to watch 2 different sporting events at the same time, but that's about it.

The salesman told me that it's beacause it's not used much anymore.

Is this true ? Also could it be beacause of the chance of burn in ?

Would like to know other folks ideas.

I hadn?t noticed that. With multiple tuners/inputs in HDs I think it?s used more now than ever! I hope that?s not true and the sales guy didn?t know what he was talking about.

oh ok I see, but why dont they do it anymore?
And why would P-I-P cause a burn in? i thought that only happens when you have one picture in the same postition for a long time?

Well, that is a picture in a window displayed constantly. Just like leaving the display on. But, I don't think that's much of an issue with new HD's, certainly not DLPs. I suspect it might be bottom line issue and a place to cut corners.

But, it could be the sign of evolution moving faster than we thought; from the lonely TV in the den to all out HTPC media room since all are adding optimized game modes, PC inputs, and more HDMI inputs.

If you go to Circuit Cityy's website & look at their HDTV's, & look at the specs of each set.

You'll see that many of them don't offer P-I-P anymore.

Hmm, would it be considered too extravagant to have 2 HDs? :)

The missing PIP is basically a cost issue. The TRUE PIP requires twin tuners in one set. Thats why in most cases you only saw that feature on the more expensive sets. There was also a cheaper version that needed a second device like a VCR connected to work. That system used the VCR tuner as the second channel source. Its just a feature that the manufacturers don't feel is used that much anymore. It will slowly be discontinued until it is completely gone. This was info given to me by our area sales reps about a year ago.

Yes but, the HDs have two: the NTSC and the ATSC tuners. Why NOT offer the PIP? I can?t see where the savings are for the bottom line on profits.

Why choose the LCD projection over DLP? Is it a style issue?

No, how often do you have to change the bulb for a DLP, compared to a LCD ?

Well, LCD projection units and DLP BOTH have bulbs to be replaced with life expectancy of approximately 6000 hours. Of course the SXRD unit is actually an LCOS, not LCD projection and the replacement bulb is a bit higher in price than the previously mentioned items and has the same approximate life span.

Also, DLP can offer true 1080p. True LCDs offer 1080p but, not the SONY LCD projection units, although the SXRD LCOS units do offer 1080p.

IMO, the DLP offers better performance than the LCD projection units.

I just came back from CC & am trn between 2 TV's.

First is the Sony LCD KDS50A2000 on sale for $2199. Have had my eye on it for a few weeks.

The 2nd is the Samsung SAM HLS5687W 56 in. on sale for $2079.

The picture on the Samsung looked better. When viewing both sets at angle, the Samsung had a better picture as well.

Anybody have any suggestions or opinions between the two.

Seems like w/ the Samsung you get more for what you pay for.

I need some input, I maybe making my purchase tomorrow.

I agree that the off center viewing on my Samsung DLP is much better than the Sony LCD.
I think that the LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon) which is actually a JVC D-ILA improves on the motion problems of older LCD projection versus DLP but, I still think the DLP is the better value for better performance.
