hi:

I just purchased a new Honda Civic. It has their factory navigation system. The dvd used to operate this sytem costs $180 for a replacement if you lose or damage it. Has anyone ever tried backing up this type of dvd?

Info:
The dvd has over 8GB of data on it. The files are in UDF format?? They look like regular files on any data cd or dvd. Shrink and DVDClone do not recognize it, however Decrypter will recognize it.

I don't have a DL burner. If decrypter is able to create an .ISO file and then I use Shrink to compress it do you think it will work in the Honda?
Any comments appreciated. Regards..

Hi:

Decrypter just finished backing up the file to an .iso. When I tried to read it into Shrink it says its and invalid DVD structure. DVDClone also can't read it. I seem to be out of programs. Is there anything I can do at this juncture? Regards...

I think you are going to have to use a dvd 9. I doubt it would even work properly if you did get it shrunk down. It is a data disc, not a video.

Good Luck.

hi:

Yes that makes a lot of sense to me...hmmm, kinda stupid to buy a DL drive. Figure I'll wait for the High def drives to show up. I'm sure they can do DL. Regards...

with Data DVDs you can't shrink the files down as you can with Video files to fit onto a DVD5! so a DVD9 should be used to make a 1:1 copy. waiting for the HD-DVDs or Blu-ray drives to come down to what it costs for a new DVD burner that does DLs is going to be a good wait! Your choice.

yes you make a good point there. well it just so happens (murphys law) that my plextor px-708a is starting to give me trouble. When I put a dvd in the drive the activity light bounces back and forth from yellow to green for a good ten minutes before she stays solid green. It never did that before. I tried cleaning it with a cd cleaner disc with those brushes, but still the same problem.

Once the light turns green she works ok but again it takes at least 10 minutes for her to access the dvd. I know its off topic but maybe I should just buy a DL drive for now. any comments appreciated. Regards...

hi:

OK this is weird. I ran the plextor diags and the drive is GOOD. So I scratched my head and said what did I install recently that possibly could be causing this? I recently bgt a Civic which has a PC Card slot in it. You can store your mp3's on a compactflash or SD chip. I recently bgt a sandisk 2gb chip and installed their software for their reader/writer.

Its called IMAGEMATE and its used with your usb 2.0 port. It makes the reader act as a removable drive and assigns it a letter (mine is J drive). Then you just drop and drag your music files using windows explorer. So I uninstalled that software and everything is back to normal. In addition the reader works w/o it...go figure...5 hrs wasted, but problem solved. Regards...
