Hi,
I am using Windows xp pro SP2, and use Nero Burning Rom 6.3 as my burning program. Yesterday after I realised a few of my video files were n't working properly - I decided to fix the problem by going to this forum http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608 and everything Praetor said definately worked for certain video files of mine. But because some of my files were showing up in black and white still I figured I needed extra codecs so I downloaded the DivX 5.x codec pack and this fixed all my remaining video file problems (they were no longer in black and white). But today, now that they are working and fixed - I want to burn them onto disc using Nero. I am trying to make a VCD with the AVI file and it encodes til about 10% - but then Nero just closes without any warning message - although I recieved this one once,

the instruction at "0x318fe97f" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

but now Nero just closes the encoding process without warning or an error window?!

I then downloaded the latest version of WinMPG Video Convert to convert my AVI file to VCD (thinking I'd be able to burn it this way). A similar thing happened - the encoding reached 13% this time but came up with the following error:

so I then went and tried to fix my registry - as there are obviously errors in it by downloading 'Registry Fix 3.0.2' and it found 81 errors. I fixed the errors and tried to burn the file again. Nero closed like before. I tried to convert it to VCD. Same error again!?

The video codec that Nero is using to encode my video is the codec highlighted in the image below section below...

Would someone please help if possible? I'd greatly appreciate it. Cheers

You might like to try and update your Nero to a later version, 6.6.0.18 from here, both packages.

http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

If the files are AVI then heres a simple guide on how I do mine, it's using Nero7 but works the same for Nero6.

Hi gwendolin,
Thanks for replying so fast! I followed your instructions and greatly appreciate them, however it hasn't got me burning AVI files yet.

Package 2
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe
I followed these instructions and installed both packages....
but when I started burning the file I could see the way it was encoding the video and it was very blurry. That is how my AVI file started before I updated my enoders/decoders (like I said in the last post)... So to solve the problem I deleted the second package you suggested and my AVI files play fine in windvd. Thinking that because my Nero is updated I may be able to burn successfully now - I tried again to burn the AVI file. The following error showed up:

I then saved the following log file.

I'm not sure what to do now as that error didn't show up before I updated Nero? and If I install the second package it encodes my AVI file badly when burning it to the disk?? What do you think the solution is? Please let me know when you can.

Thanks again!

It is recommended to have a minimum of 512mb RAM to burn DVDs successfully, suggest you add a further 256mb

When converting AVI files you will be left with the same quality as that with which you started....package 2 will have NO adverse effect on any conversions.

Thanks for the fast response!!!

how do I change this?

Also, I am guessing I cannot burn this file as VCD as you have only been mentioning burn as a DVD file.

But when there was a preview of the AVI file being encoded by Nero the image wasn't the same (as in it was very blurred) in comparison to watching it in windvd. This is why I deleted the second package - because I thought that the image being shown in the preview pane was the same as I would see it on a television screen (blurred, distorted etc).

Should I reinstall the second package and not worry about the preview pane showing a blurred AVI file??

Install the second package, update your firmware, use good quality media such as Verbatim or Sony (made in japan) and burn at around 4X.

There is a program called ConvertX...you can d/l the trial version and use it to convert your AVI files...just to see if it is Nero causing the problems.

This file is the Sonic Solutions CD Burning Ripping engine and used by other burning programs. This file CAN GET corrupted sometimes, try running the Roxio zapper:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

by doing this could correct your problem.

also I would run the Nero cleaning tools and then reinstall what Gwendolin said and the provided links to get a clean install.

Hello again,
If there (unfortunately) was a facial expression I could show you now I'd use it but instead I'll just say I am not a happy camper. I followed the instructions you have suggested so far and it hasn't worked. When Nero was transcoding my AVI file it said it was going to take approximately 2hrs and 51minutes or something ridiculously long like that so I went out and came home to find that it had only transcoded as much as when I had left. My computer had also frozen, there were no errors displayed so I just restarted without shutting down. Obviously (without Nero telling me) my burn process FAILED!!? :(

I am slowly running out of options!! I haven't tried the convertx program yet but I might try it now. I'm willing to try everything to get this to work as I need to give this as a gift before too long. Any other ideas? Btw, thank you so much for all your brilliant ideas so far - I really appreciate it. Lets hope we sort it out eventually??!

P.S is making a VCD not an option?

Ok I just tried to create a VCD with the same file and it began transcoding although Nero froze within 10 seconds of beginning the transcode. If I was going to convert the file, what would be the best option, and would this help - or should I not try that?

Ok I've tried some other things while waiting for responses..

I've tried burning other AVI files on my system using Nero. The same thing happens - Nero freezes the system and I have to restart. Another thing that I have just discovered is when I enter my documents and go to the file that I want to download - If I right click the file and go to properties - when I select it the following error occurs and the my documents folder closes when I click ok.

But this only happens when I go to the file that I am trying burn and where this file is located. E.g. When it was located in my "downloads" folder it happened there, so I moved it to test whether it happened anywhere else by moving the file to "my documents" and that error occured again...

I don't want to have to reformat or anything just for this one file but I really want it to work for me?!!? Any ideas on clearing this error up? Very bizarre scenario - I must admit...I hope there's a solution!!

I tried burning and converting with Convertx and the computer froze at 2%.

I also noticed that when I ran a virus scan before in both ewido and AVG the system froze half way through that as well. Turns out this may be more serious than I thought?? Perhaps I should do a reformat... I am not a professional at this and have only done it twice but both have been successful. How do I back up my drivers etc... or is there a better way to fix the issue besides reformatting??? It's such a long process!?!?

Any ideas?

I think that the reason why Nero and other memory intense programs have problems is because your memory is only at 256MB and Gwendolin advised your with your first Nero log:
Quote:

I would go further to say put in 1G worth of RAM in to make the program run easier!

ok...... first you'll have to deside if it's really worth putting in more RAM into an old computer.... how old is your computer? can you give me more specs on it?

If it was me, I would open the Taskmanager and look at the applications which were running. The likes of Internet Explore/Firefox or an Antvirus can eat up memory.
Reboot before processing video and use the Taskmanager to shut down progs that aren't required.

The computer is only about 10 months old. I bought it at the end of last year...but perhaps in computer terms that is very old because technology just keeps changing by the second...

Although 512M is recommended for XP, if you could burn DVD's before then it should still do it - unless hardware is failing (unlikely) or resources are failing. And they might be if you keep adding applications.
If you suspect a memory shortage you can turn off:
avgemc
avgupsv
guard
Firefox
You don't need them when your not surfing the net.
mhotkey & ctfmon ??? probably not needed.
Off course 'Explorer' won't be running when you exit 'Task Manager', so that's best left alone.
Google each process and you will figure out what you need.
Try your dvd again and when your finished working on the dvd, reboot and you get all those processes back again.
I would also run the likes of 'startcop' to find out just how many apps are gobbling up resources as you start Windows.

Thanks. I am just going to reformat now. As I haven't done it anyway since I bought the computer and feel it is needed.

Quote:

They are the applications for my wireless mouse and keyboard. The burn process is great for everything else so I don't think I'll upgrade to 512mb or 1g.

Once I finish the reformat I'll try not to have those processes open though. We'll see what happens. If I can't burn the file I'll just go buy the DVD brand new - haha. Save a lot of hassles.

so...........................

my computer loads the xp pro disc... the six times that I have tried it the disc freezes when installing a certain xp application. Therefore, I can't repair the xp I have, I can't install a completely new version and delete the current NTFS system. This is going from bad to extremely worse. So angry!

without telling me to buy a whole new computer... what's the best solution???
