Are you saying they play in your DADs player but not in yours?

If this is the case then more then likly the problem is the media you are using. Have you changed DVD blank media recently? This could be the problem. Your DVD player may not like the media you are using. If they are DVD+R disc then poissibly it will help if you booktype them to DVD-ROM.

born2ride,

Based on what you stated, the problem could be caused by combination of factors;

1) Media, memorex hasn't always beed associated with good media. If you're willing to try another brand, try Sony, Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden.

2) As larrylje stated, your player may have a problem with playing Memorex disks or playing DVD+R media type. Read your player's manual and make sure the player is able to recognize and play DVD+R media, if not, then stick to what is recommended in the manual.

Note: Some older player's are very picky and will play only DVD-ROM disks, if this is the case, then you have a couple of options.

-If your burner supports the feature, you can try and booktype a DVD+R disk as a DVD-ROM to increase compatibility. Here's some info on it if your're interested.
http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

-Since you state that the disk/s will play on your dad's player, he may have a newer player with multi-format play back ability. You might want to consider buying a newer player to replace yours(they're pretty cheap now) with the same features.

3) You don't state what speed you burn at, but I would stick to 4X, this will also help with increasing compatibility.

Use Anydvd and believe

and this is just to reitterate what everyone else is telling you:

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch! verbatim are the only disks from Taiwan that I will use.... all my other disks are MIJs! Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, Sony, Fuji and other brands MIJ! check lable on spindle or box for the MIJ!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

why the +R media is better than the -R media

thanks for all the great inforamtion.the burner speed in shrink has 2 options i use max setting.i seemed to have issues with 2.4 speed. i will try a brand you guys suggested.i am still and a little confused on dvd-rom or DVD+R. rom is that an older type? also this problem only pertains to the new method of burning that was in the orginal post.so i was thinking that it was the way the progams were restructing the dvd data? but iam always learning here thanks to all the memebers

Great added advice above.

You deffently want to ditch the memorsux. They do not burn consitently. Which means some might burn correctly and you might not have problems but others will not burn and work. You will get a hit and miss on cheap media.

Below I will show you how to use a few diffrent programs to get the Manufature ID# of the disc. Then go to the link below and find the ID under whatever class media it is in. If it is not listed as 1st class media then you need to change your media.

Nero Info Tool

IMGBurn

DVD Decrypter

As you can see my media is TYGO2 which are 1st class media...

Below is the link to the DVD media guide...
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Keep in mind that just because you have 1st class media dose not mean you will get good burn results. You need to find first class media that works well with your DVD Burrner and your stand alone player. Once you find that media stick with it. Also as stated above burn at half the speed that is recomended on the media. Do not burn slower then 4x. So if you have media that are 4x and 8x burn at 4x. If the media is 16x then burn at 8.

The diffrence between DVD-R and DVD+R is the way the information is burnt to the DVD. DVD-R usses a system similar to Pressed comercial DVD's do. Where DVD+R burn the information diffrently which in some casses older DVD players and some new do not have the technology to read the DVD+R format. Which is why it is recomended to booktype DVD+R disc to change the way it burns the information to the disc and make it seem like it is a DVD-ROM disc.

Below is another litte guide that shows you how to booktype a DVD+R disc using IMGBurn

If you are trying to play DVD+R discs on a Panasonic recorder or DVD player, the device will refuse to play the discs because they "violate the DVD Forum" rules. That is one problem. As for brands, the statement that some "do not burn consistently" can mean two things: 1) a single brand may work well on one drive but not another, or 2) a single brand may come from multiple factories, particularly if that brand is very popular. If a particular brand is working for you, it is compatible with your drive; and there is no need to change.

If you are trying to play DVD+R discs in an older Panasonic player, NO BRAND will work. Switching to a different brand of DVD+R will only waste your money. You can either switch to DVD-R or fool the Panasonics into thinking your discs are movie discs by changing the bit type on DVD+R discs to the DVD Forum "DVD-ROM" code. (You can't do that on DVD-R discs because of DVD Forum rules now work against them.)

Load the disc in your dvd burner drive and use imgburn to find the disc ID.
I just tried to read the disc ID from my DVD reader that does not burn and it does not work with any program to read the disc ID.

Book types can only be changed on DVD+RW discs. Once the bit code is written to a DVD+R disc's dye, it cannot be changed.

I am burning a back up of RV. now using verts media on the list in post mcc004. have not booktyped yet will do that tomorrow if you think it is necessary.

a-ha, you use Nero....

thread teleported to Nero forum..

if you use Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

if you use Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar.

either way you can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Nero API version: 6.3.1.6
- that's old now, however your burner is recognised fine and yor burning problems are not Nero's fault so no need to update Nero necessarily

Quote:
Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A> Version: 1.0C
- as have been saying (as we successfully updated your burner from an ND-1100A to an ND-1300A here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/409365/2491513), firmware is up to date, but a few years old, and the blank discs you're using are too new for the firmware to recognise

Quote:
Physical memory : 383MB (392204kB)
Free physical memory: 107MB (110572kB)
Memory in use : 71 %
you need to make sure sufficient free memory is available prior to ALL burning

Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286127 (508:01.52, 4465MB)
- 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

Quote:
Recorder: _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A, Media type: DVD+R
- the details of the blanks discs aren't present; this is similar to what you should see -
Quote:
Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: TYG02 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. Obviously we know the firmware's up to date (as have been trying to improve matters here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/409365/2491513), but firmware's a few years old and the blank discs you're using are too new for the firmware to recognise

Quote:
Burn process completed successfully at 4x (5,540 KB/s)
hmmm, obviously that's not quite true in this case

- the ATAPI drivers are supposed to be listed in this section, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

1, yes, correct, only update Nero if you want to
2, yes that's concerning; we got your NEC updated from an 1100A to a 1300A which was worth a try, but was only going to help whilst you stick to 4x discs, which are becoming increasingly scarce
3, just make sure sufficient free memory prior to burning; 384MB total isn't too bad
4, i personally only now use top notch discs but still keep ALL movies to 4300MB to save accidentally damaging the outer edge of discs when handling/playing them
5, that 3-line example i posted there is smilar to what you see when firmware knows what discs it's using; that example is my laptop burner using some Taiyo Yuden 'TYG02' discs. your burner's firmware only prints the name of the burner as it simply cannot recognise those blank discs - due to the firmware being just too old.
6, the ATAPI drivers are not loaded correctly. I can dig out another link for reloading the drivers however the crux of your problem is the burner; as long as you stick to known-working 4x discs you would be ok, but that burner isn't equipped (in it's now unsupported) firmware to use those blank discs you've got..

going by the Nero log it's just your burner that's letting you down, but yes, for now stick to what works, at least you're armed with info in your threads for when you can make any changes
