Let me start off by saying that in the past week is the first time I have ever started to Soft Mod my PSP and play arond with 1.5 and homebrew applications. Now that you have an understanding that at time I might have no clue what I am talking about let us begin!

I started off from Dark_Alex's Website, guide to downgrading and the like then found this custom firmware page loosely linked to the site. I made the upgrade, which supprisingly was more complex than the downgrade from 2.71. First off I did notice that one skipped over detail that I see most people complaining about is a very simple one under the PSP folder Create a new folder called GAME150, 99.9% of your homebrews will run from there.
Let me just go over a list though of things that hate you, and I can't get help for:

* IRShell hates you very soul

* Devhook hates you but not as much as IRShell devhook works but has minor issus frezzing spells and sometimes just dumps back into the 2.71 SE-A, haven't figured out why and to technically uninclined to figure it out.

* (Resevered for the next app that pisses me off and readme's and countless hours of reading don't tell you shat because this firmware is new and people more experinced than I are pussy to try it)

Now that that is out of the way, let me go over the basic finner points of the new firmware.

1) as in it's name it is fcuking customizable seriouslyy what more could you want. down to even the font selection and various aspects of the firmware.
2) No need to downgrade. Oh I am not saying it can't be done, well actually yes I am, you have to use the embeded recovery tool (holding down R during startup) and reflash any firmware you want including the 2.71 SE-A firmware itself with a bit of play.
3) minimal risk design to cutomize, Oh snap I just boffed up my psp but it can still acess the embedded (hold R during setup) menu and I can reflash my firmware and start to boff it up again. WARNING does not null the ability to brick a PSP, you still can ... Don't be dumb. this feature is for say if I boff up the text for the XMB to display, yeah my firmware deffinately won't boot but I don't have a brick either. YOu brick your PSP and i laugh at you, and hope you have 100 bones to unbrick the little prat.
4) It runs like 2.71 with all the little features still intact without need to run dev hook, with the exception of some UMDs that for whatever reason just don't want to play, DEVHook .46 works quite nicely for those little bastardizations of the SONY corporate mafia.
5)PSP personalize on 2.71, tick off I like this app. and to the first dunce lthat likes to talk shat, just remmeber, I boffed your mom with my hard and soft modded PSP.
5) Anything beyond this is all really opionated so instead I'll talk about how to go about installing the little bugger.

2.71 SE-A Install guide for anyone really, I am a new person to the modding community and I seemed to pull it out my arse.

1) Start with Firmware version 2.71 then use Dark_Alex's generic downgrader (provided at his site that I will PM you the link for because I don't want to go pissing off mods and the like) You should now have a fresh install of Firmware version 1.5

2) Any other place tells you to "use the helper program" while true that really is just a cop-out for the fact they don't know how to use it or they are lazy. so here goes:

2a) Make sure your battery is at 75% rght now, if not plug it in because by the time we need to flash it need to be at least 75% to run, and always, it is advisable to plug it is anyway, Just fcuking dooooo iiiiitttt!

2b) download the 2.71SEA rar from anywhere you want, once agian no links don't want to piss people (mods, not people like you) off.

2c) VIA the USB Link, from the RAR Extract the "seupdmaker" & "seupdmaker%" folders into you game folder. (PSP\GAME) Also you must Find the 1.5 updater file and 2.71 updater files located at any PSP download site with the exception of Sony's site, because their a bunch of tits anyway. Rename then respectively 150.pbp & 271.pbp and throw them into the "seupdmaker" folder. NOW disconnect the PSP from you MAC or PC (thats right PCs are the low man on the totem)

2d) ON the PSP go to the MEM Stick under the games menu and select the seupdmaker. This will generate a file called "DATA.DXAR" Reconnect you PSP to your Computer. (Macs over PC biatches)

2e) make a back up of this file it is handy to have for others and for recovery reasons.

(before this next step, remmeber about the battery thing, before the final step the battery must be at 75% or above, if not the program just sumps out, and nothing bad happens it just won't update till it reaches 75%)
2f) Remove the "setupmaker" folders and put the "271seflasher" & "271seflasher%" in their places, now take the DATA.DXAR file and drop it in the "271seflasher" folder. Disconnect your PSP from your computer. And launch the 271seflasher app on your PSP, verify this is what you want and remmeber fcuking with your PSP is always a risk, if shat goes sour I don't want to hear about it, these things happen. Confirm with the X button cancel with the R button.

3) if you pressed X you made a good choice. you are now the proud owner of a 2.71 SE-A PSP, brag about it too much and your PSP buddies might want to shove it ... well you get the picture.

4) Power it down, nice and safe like and remove the battery for a couple of seconds. Then put it back in, now go into the system menu in the OS and restore factory defualts so your flash1 is all clean and happy, or not, and let that stick up your pipes.

5) RECOVERY!!!

6) this mode kicks ass, while holding the R button during the power up of your PSP 2.71 SE-A will load what I call an "embeded menu". within this menu you can recover make all kinds of cuztomizations turn off the corrupt data icons (some are hidden some are not, but at least their are not millions of the little prats anymore) but we're getting off track. see the recovery tag that is what we will set u. Exit out of this entirely and load up my favorite the USB connection.

7) take the recovery forlder out of the SE-A RAR and put it and all it's files into PSP/GAME/ folder.

8) one last thing, you need one more pbp file, the file you want to recover to, simple ... go find an update that you would like to recover to, rename that pbp whatever its name may be, to UPDATE.PBPand drop it in PSP/GAME/RECOVERY/

9) I know there is a way to even reflash the 2.71 SE-A firmware you need to include the DATA.DXAR file we created earlier and the eboot.pbp file renamed to UPDATE.PBP (I think) and drop those two files into PSP/GAME/RECOVERY.

Welcome to the world of 2.71 SE-A there is a link for an app to customize the Firmware, but once again no links, just ask, I'll PM.

UPDATE:
* Updating to 2.71 SE-B look for the update file out there.
* Make sure you put the file into your GAME150 folder (If you haven't already installed 2.71 SE-A, install it first.)
* Put in a UMD Game disk, and run the updater. I am not sure why it won't work without hte game disk, but I tried three times, and three times got partial bricks, so I do not advise this. just put a game disk in.
* Power off, and just to be safe pop out the batery for a few seconds, put it back in, and BAM, 2.71 SE-B Enjoy.
