This is a little mor complicated than it sounds.

You will need a PC to act a a server (as you mentioned) most of the servers nowadays are running Windows software ( 2000 or 2003 ) for you'll need to purchase : 1 license for the server, and a number of of client licenses depending on how many pcs you want to access the server at the time, every PC must have its own client software license (Windows '98, XP, or 2000)if you already have an OS on your PC all you need will be the server licences. Your server software will have to be configured to allowed the clients to connect to the server and what parts of the server they will have rights to access. Your server also has to be configured to access the internet and share the connection with the clients, the server also has to be configured with his own IP address (IP address, which is one of the ways to identify a PC on the internet)and then configured that server with DHCP to be able to issue IP addresses to every client PC on the network. If you accessing the internet using an ISP the you you may consider getting e permanent IP address from them and then configure the server to subnet that address manually or automatically using Network Address Translation (NAT, another future included with you server software). After the server configuration nightmare then comes the picky part to be able to control your clients using the server software and setting up profiles and rights so you can control the bandwith, the sites and even the time of the day your clients will be able to access the internet. there are many sites on the inetrnet that you will be able to find just about all the information you need to accomplish this. If you are interested with a Windows 2000 server the check this site

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtec...gs/sgsch04.mspx

If you are more into server security the you may want to look into setting up a Linux Server, cheaper, reliable and secure. Anyway you have a lot of choices, take time to decide what you need to do and the best way to get there with the least amout of trouble and according to you budget. GOOD LUCK

Setting up a server isn't that complicated. Any machine will work as a server. Probably the best solution for what you want is to set up a DHCP server. Since you seem to want manual control over the connection of computers to the network, you can simply set ISC DHCP up on a Linux machine (= no cost!) and let the server dole out IP addresses. Your network would be connected through a switch, one host plugged into each port, and one port going to the modem or firewall, if you're using one.

Alternatively, you can skip DHCP and statically assign IP addresses, and use IPTables firewall rules to filter traffic to any host except those you explicitly approve.

A third option is to create a multi-user, multi-terminal Unix or Linux machine and let people log on to access the net. This works nicely if you only have a few users and has the advantage of requiring the users to provide credentials to logon.

A fourth option is to use an authenticated gateway, which you would use if you want automatic logon with supplied credentials. This can be rather involved, however.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I think the easiest thing to do is not run a server, per se, but set up an ICS or Internet Connection Sharing-type setup. It should be doable, but you'll need 2 more Network Interface Cards.

Everything you need to know is right in Windows, if you have XP. Go to Control Panel->Network and Internet Connections->Setup or Change a Home Network and then select the "checklist for creating a network". Check the ICS or Internet Connection Sharing. On the right side are clickable links to diagrams and checklists. There also setup wizards and everything to let you know if this is for you and to get you started.

P.S. If your goal is to keep the kids off the net unless you authorize them, most wired routers e.g. D-Link allow you to block internet to one or more PCs connected to it. You would block internet for those PCs until you login to the router and allow internet access. A bit of a pain, but it's effective, and it's the cheapest way to go.

I'm not really too familiar with those, but if you want to run some programs and links past me, I'll comment. Basically, anything that makes a drive image and stores it somewhere is a good idea though. I use DriveImage XML because it's free. However, true Kiosk programs are a mixed bag at preventing people from doing things though like running software. For the most part, as long as you don't use Internet Explorer, you're safe from most malware except what might be downloaded and run. I don't like to actully remove it, though if you are worried that kids or others might try to use it anyway then you have to. If you disable File and Print sharing between computers, and run a personal firewall like Comodo, then even if a computer gets owned, it probably won't affect the others.

There's a few steps further you can go, such as using a router's filtering to filter out .EXE, .OCX, and .CAB files. That is pretty effective at preventing people from downloading runnable files. Again, good kiosk software will do all of this, but I never really investigated it before.

Well what i want to do is that i dont want kids and other people to use the other two computers for internet when i have not given them access thats why am thinking on installing an internet cafe software. Today i bought an ADSL modem and a D-Link 8 Port ethenrnet hub . Now the program that am thinking of installing is CyberCafe Pro 4 what do you think ?

It seems like severe overkill. I think the router method would be less hassle not to mentioned 5-10 times cheaper. The security and access-control features of CyberCafe seem rather meager and most can be accomplished for free with proper security settings (e.g. you can disable file downloads in IE, or, better yet, let the router restrict .EXE, .OCX, etc.) You can accomplish a lot of this by hiding the Control Panel, the Windows Run command, etc. e.g.
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/522/
http://www.easydesksoftware.com/regtrick.htm
http://www.codersource.net/win32_registry_tweaks.html
http://fox2k.net/2ktweaks/security.htm
and finally renaming or deleting regedit.exe and mmc.exe.

The kiosk software seems more oriented towards sales and service rather than controlling access or security. In fact, this software seems a bit weak in that there is no drive imaging or restoration function.

Ok am gonna do that and then can you tell me some program which can stop and start the internet of client computers from the server computer ?

That's what the router does. The nice thing is that there is really no way around it either and most routers allow you to block domains, and with a few simple keywords you can block a lot of bad stuff. My D-link DI-604 does all that and it's around $30-$50 depending if you catch a sale.

Or you can just have the computer's cables all run into the router in your room and you can plug or unplug them as they go into the switch/router. Doesn't cost anything, is easy and foolproof, and 100% hacker-proof.

Otherwise, I'd look at setting up an SSH server on the machines you want to control and using Putty on your machine to log into them and activate or deactivate them.

SSH server is free. -> http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net It includes a client. You only need to install the server on the machines you want to control; you can install the client on your machine to do the controlling. There is a readme.txt file when you install it that tells you how to set it up.

But...

I only told you about that to answer your original question. The router thing and the plugging/unplugging cable thing is probably easier, is dirt cheap, and its virtually hack-proof. Unlike SSH or any kiosk software method.
