I have a Lite-on SOHW 812S DVD +/- RW drive for my PC but when I hook it up to the system it won't read it at all. It won't read it on bootup or read it in windows at all. When I even try something such as a flash utility or Omnipatcher it says drive does not exist. I want to say this thing was flashed before but not too sure. I want to try to get this thing working if possible but not sure of even that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Flandrel

Are you sure jumpers are in right and all your IDE cables are corrects etc.
Drive should be set to master if it is your main drive or slave if it is a secondary drive.

Yeah everything is good to go on it. Matter of fact it won't even power up on bootup either. I noticed that and tried another dvd-rom drive afterwards and it powered up fine, etc. Think the drive might be dead. Not sure.

HAve you tried it in a diff mobo/PC? And checked that it is set to boot up in your BIOS?

Yeah tried it in my wife's computer and mine both. And bios is setup to auto detect the devices. Thing is with regular dvd-rom drive in the light on it lights up automatically when booting up. With the Lite-On no lights, no nothing when I boot up the computer. And all this is on the same IDE as the dvd-rom with same settings on both computers and drive settings the same as the dvd-rom, etc.

If you are trying to get two drives to work in conjunction with each other then you cant use the same settings for each drive. One has to be master and the other slave (or if using a dell pc, cable select).

See this guide on how to do it.

This could be your problem...

Sorry Ripper think I might have confused you. I reread email and yup it sounded confusing to me too. LOL. What I meant was with dvd-rom set as slave on both computers it works fine and lights light up on bootup. If I take it out and put in Lite-On even on same settings or trying alternate settings on both computers I get nothing. No lights, etc.

Ok, have you tried it with new IDE cables? And made sure the power connection on the drive isn't faulty in any way...

Otherwise, I would say your drive is dead. Sorry...

I managed to recover the drive. WHOHOO!! I used MTKFLASH for DOS by making a bootable CD and then booting up and flashing with the US0Q.bin firmware. Not sure what is better firmware out there but plan on just taking a peek.

Nice one. Well done for figuring out how to do it on your own :)

Glad it's fixed.
