Suppose your PSP is G:

Once you double click G: the window that opens is called the root of the MS it contains folders such as PSP & MP_ROOT

Amitguru said it right or in other words . Connect your psp with your computer. Now go to My Computer -> you must be seeing a psp icon , even if icon is not there double click on the new drive letter that appears after connecting your psp . ON double click you enter the memmory stick. That is the root of memmory stick. For eg. i have these drives in my computer C: , D: E:CDROM after attatching psp a new drive letter appear F:(it can be anything) . I hope this makes some sense.

Note: If you are using some homebrew etc or unzip a file you downloaded for your psp if it contains a folder MS_ROOT that means the files in this folder are to be placed on the root of memmory stick.
