Trying to burn a DVD using various programs, but Nero has worked for me using this method before but for some reason it is not now.
I go through all the stages of burning, and it takes about 45 mins at 4-6x, but when the process has completed, with a successful burning message, I try the disc out and it does not work!!!!
I put it back in my laptop and using Nero>Disc Info, it says the disc is empty!!!! I can then try and burn the disc again, so that takes another 45 mins and it still says it is empty!!!
I am using Sony discs, DVD-R which I have used before successfully first try, so why is it sometimes not working??
The otherprogram I have tried is 1Click, which again has the same problems, sometimes it burns and sometimes it don't!!
Hi marchez
You may just need a firmware update for the drive. Check NeroToolKit>InfoTool for the make and model of your drive. On the drive tab there will be field for the firmware version.
You can check the driver manufacturers (or laptop manufacturers) site or here http://rpc1.org to see if there is a later version.
What's the rated speed on the Sony's? Using a new pack?
they are 1-16x, but I am trying to burn at 4x, as Nero produces an eror when I try and burn any faster. I have also tried burning at 2x but still the same problem.
I have just tried burning a music cd, which has worked fine, and is able to be read by the drive, then I tried a data DVD burning some AVI's, which has worked before on the same discs, but they did not work, still saying that the disc is blank.
Tried burning a DVD again but still the same problem.
I have updated the firmware but still no luck.
What is going on with it?? I have even tried a system restore back to last week when i know it was working.
I have tried various other shop bought DVD's that work fine, and I have now tried burning with 4 different programs that all say the burn was succesful but I still have a blank disc.
Doing a defrag now, leave it runnning while I am at work. None of the discs I have 'burnt' will play on anything.
Looks like my laptop will be going in for repair, I have done a few googles on my particular brand of dvd drive and it does seem that there are quite a few problems with it.
Thanks for all your help, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

try better media before you go and ditch the drive! Some drives are picky on what it will play. Even disks that were used before or in the same spindle can be different and then the drive won't work on them as before! the rule of thumb here is to use media that is made in Japan. These are the best disks. Verbatim is the only exception to the MIJ rule as they are top notch media and made in Taiwan and the only media from Taiwan that I will use. Check the lable on the spindle or box and make sure it say MIJ on it or just go out and get Verbatim! Also read your drive manual and make sure you buy media that is the right speed for your drive! If your drive is over 2 yrs old or so then buy no higher than 8x media for it might not record 16x media correctly. Even with a firmware upgrade my old drive would not record 16x media when they said the firmware upgrade would correct this! Like Binkie said.... laptop burners are not the greatest.... use and external drive with your laptop for better results!
