I did do a search for Angela's Ashes but nothing like this came up.

Backing up the region 2 version with DVD decrypter I noticed that VTS_01_2.vob of the main film was only just over 500 meg. I tried it in different drives and it's always the same.

I can look at it with Explorer and it's the usual 1Gb, but in Decrypter it's half the size. I also tried smartripper in file mode and it gets to 50%, then says something about "broken" file and jumps to 100%, leaving a 500mb file on my HDD.

I backed it up to 2 discs using DVD x copy and it's fine so I did all that renaming of vobs and creating IFOs stuff, but I get an "Insert disc 2" message flashing up in the middle of the film.

Decrypter doesn't show an error or anything. I've never seen this before, can anyone help?

Okay, I've managed to decrypt the film to my hard drive by runnning it through DVD Shrink with no compression. I would still like to know what went wrong, though.
