Alright... Assuming the information I've read on the 'net is correct then they're both MATX motherboards and cases so, the SHOULD be interchangable, If that's the case, however I can not guarantee that. I don't know for sure if dell uses proprietary form factors or not. What I would recommend to do is to call dell and ask a tech what form factor the Dimension 3000 motherboard is, ATX, micro ATX or something else, and if they won't tell you ask for a supervisor or level 2 tech, whatever you need to do until they tell you, and the same for the 4600. The question here is, have you considered just buying a cheap ATX case, and buying a motherboard and a CPU online? You can greatly upgrade the system for fairly cheap if you're not needing to buy new RAM, HDD, CD/DVD drives, monitor, keyboard, mouse. You may want to consider that, because not only can you do more for less, but nothing beats the feel of building your own computer. Good luck.
Every night has its day.
Even forever must come to an end....
I think.

JaseC I upgraded my 3000 with 4600 motherboard. The Dimension 2300, 2350, 2400, 3000, 4600, and 4700 all use that same Chassis mATX.ALL are Socket 478 except the 4700 being Socket 775.There was at least 4 different 4600 motherboards used with the F4491(on board video) motherboard being the last and most upgradable it will accept up to a 3.4GHz Northwood or Prescott CPU.Also these model cases are not proprietary (except for the front panel connections) I have another 4600 i built for my Son using a mATX gigabyte motherboard and AMD processor. My setup is Dimension 3000 case,4600 F4491 motherboard, 3.4GHz Northwood,Zalman CNPS9500 Heatsink, PC Power & Cooling Silencer 410 Power Supply,1GB Corsair Value Select Ram,Seagate Barracuda 320GB hardrive.

Hmmmm, No I dont think they did. The green light on the motherboard lit up, but nothing else, It would not power up or anything. I dont know if i got a defective motherboard or it was just me that didnt install it right, but im sure i did that.

Oh yea, I also bought a new heatsink fan for the processor, but the 3 pin connector on the dell motherboard was not the same as the new heatsink.

JaseC,Dell's heatsink, fan and heatsink retention bracket are all proprietary. You need to get the correct Dell fan and hook it up to the motherboard as normal are you will get a bios error.I run the Zalman Heatsink fan power straight off the power supply using a 3pin to 4 pin adapter and left the Dell fan hooked to motherboard. If your new heatsink is NON-Dell you will also need a standard Socket 478 retention bracket.

Yes you can use the Dell Dimension 3000 heatsink fan and shroud setup with the 4600 motherboard. The only thing if your still using the 3000 power supply and want to use SATA hardrive it wont have the power connecters for it you will need SATA power adapter. So if you have a GOOD 4600 motherboard this is a very easy upgrade. Also remember there are 4 different 4600 motherboards 2 of which have (on board video)but they all have an AGP slot for Video Card.
Good luck...

JaseC here are some info on the different motherboards and what they support.1)2Y832 - needs AGP video card 2)N2828 - has integrated graphics, so works with or without AGP video card. 3)F4491 - has integrated graphics so works with or without AGP video card and has Prescott CPU support.I would go with the F4491 it was the lastest and supported the most cpu's.There may have been bios revisions for the early boards that added support for latter cpu's,but if you go with the F4491 you dont have to worry about it.
