Ok that means the firmware can't find your drive.

What problems are you having? Maybe a firmware update isn't required...

For one thing, if you are going to update the firmware, use a bitsetting firmware i.e. either the Liggy's Bitsetting 1.06 or the 1Y6 firmware from http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com. Then it'll bitset single-layer DVD+Rs as well as do everything else that the 1.06 firmware does. Liggy's and Dee's also has a firmware flasher that seems to be more tolerant than the NEC one. However, playback problems are almost always the result of using junk media. See my sig on that.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Thanks,
Liggydee 1y6 seems to solve the interruption problems and many more.

But I think I have a big problem with my XP professional.
Software thought that my nd3550a was a hard disc.
After flash with 1y6 it sees a DVD-R ? ok.
The problem is that when a DVD is in the player, it doesn't play with any player.
I have to select the video ts files to play the disc.
I don't know what to do.
Please HELP!!!

Make sure you burn as a DVD VIDEO not DVD data disk.

Yeah, that's a possibility. Another is that the DVD software itself may have gone flaky. PowerDVD reliably goes bonkers on any PC I use, and I'll bet a lot of the other players are like that too. I don't think it's the fault of your drive though. Maybe uninstalling your DVD software and then reinstalling it might help.

Ok I think I am having the same problem as you and maybe you can help me if you have gotten further then me. I have a NEC 3550A setup as a external hardrive and it is plugged into my Dell 1100 by usb 2.0. I burn on TDK dvds and Veibatum DVDs. It begins burning and then an error pops up and it stops. I use Alchol 120% and Nero 7.0 Ultra. I went to the NEC website and saw that I was running 1.5 and that 1.6 is the latest so I downloaded there upgrader and ran it. Well it asks to restart your computer so I let it. When it started back up it now says that my burner is now a Mass storage device. So I can no longer burn with it. How can I get it back to a burner. Is this the same problem that you are having? Any advice?

To SVTSkippy.

press start, options, control panel, system, devices, device control, select device CD/DVD and double click on ND3550A.
Select software (driver).
I see this:
1/7/2001
5.1.2535.0
Microsoft Windows XP Publisher (Europe)

With this windows software ND3550A works good.
