I'm a huge motorsports fan...whenever a race comes on TV I record it to my Dish Network DVR. Because I often am not watching in real-time due to rewinding an exciting pass or pausing to run to the toilet, I record the entire telecast, including commercials. I would much rather have a neat video minus any advertisements to share with others. Currently, the only solution I can think of is ripping the entire DVD to my hard drive as an .avi, then cutting out the commercials with an editing program.

The problem is ripping takes the same amount of time as the true length of the telecast, plus it ties up 95% of my computer's resources leaving me sitting on my hands for as much as 4 hours. Is there another way? Can I edit the .vob files themselves? Making a good set of DVD files from a good .avi is also about 1X in Nero Vision so it makes sense that compression takes that long.

I have access to professional authoring software, would something like Sony Vegas+DVD allow me to edit .vob files? Has anyone else completed a similar project succesfully?

VobBlanker can edit your VOB files.

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

consider getting a better machine(dual-core) if you want to surf the web etc. while ripping/burning

and yes Vob Blanker would work

Burning is no problem, only transcoding or ripping from DVD to .avi. What's the absolute best software to create .avi from .vob anyway? I have a couple that I think are second rate.

If you want to share it with others you'd be best keeping it in mpeg2 so they'll be able to watch it in a DVD player.

Copy/ rip the VOBs to the hard drive, use VOB2MPG 2.3 to convert them all into one mpeg file (few minutes), and then use the best mpeg editing program there is (VideoReDo) to frame-accurately remove ads etc.. Your new mpeg will then be ready to be authored & burned.

Incidentally, if you really want to convert to AVI here's a thread that may help: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/411732#2511317

I have recorded Tv onto DVD with a standalone DVD recorder many times and a few times I have ripped that DVD to my HDD and edited it to remove comercials etc, However.
I have found it far quicker (over all) & easier to use a recorder that allows you to edit the data on the machine itself. (No PC required then)

PC Specs: CPU-C2D E8400, M/B-P5N-E SLI, RAM 4Gig OCZ Platinum rev2 ,VGA- Nvidia 8800GT 512MB, HDD- Hitachi Deskstar SATAII 1TB, 250Gig Maxtor IDE HDD.
Corsair HX520 PSU, Liteon Lightscribe DVD Writer, Pioneer BluRay drive.

I believe my machine has that ability. I always assumed it would be more time comsuming to do it there than on the PC. I'll give that a shot, thanks!

No problem,
Some machines make it easier than others and my new machine (Panasonic) records on any format of disc but only allows me to edit on RAM (i Think)

Give it a try, and I'm sure if you factor in the Ripping time on PC, getting used to the software app for editing and then transcoding and getting a successful burn you will find that doing it on the machine is fairly simple.
In the past I have edited on the machine, then done an iso read, iso write to make a copy of the edited recording to keep. Then use the master again (assuming its RW or RAM)
