What's the best/easiest/quickest software to use when ripping from DVD and then converting to AVI?

Use RipIt4Me to rip your dvds, that is freeware.

Then use winavi to convert to AVI

It is very simple. You will start working from the first launch.

I don't like all in one packages such as that AVS thingy. Prefer to do it in different apps. It might take 5 mins longer but meh.

Did you try AoA DVD Ripper? It's pretty easy and the quality is great if you encode it with DivX codec.

I think I've got it sussed now.
I did try to get the RipIt4Me set up but I think I've got a conflicting bit of software in here, so it crashed out. (This is what happens when you don't know what you're doing.)

I'm using SmartRipper 241 to rip,
Magic Video Batch to convert to convert to MPEG1
and then iRivers media convert tool to convert it to a viewable format on my iRiver PMP-120.
It takes a while but it seems to work.
