Hey everyone!

I was thinking of doing a CPU and RAM upgrade soon, but I am not sure if its worth it or not. Currently I have a 939-socket AMD 3200+ Winchester Core for the processor and 1GB Kingston DDR RAM (2 x 512MB).

I am using this as a gaming rig so I thought I would look for some input before buying anything.

Here is what I am thinking of doing:

My processor is good but I found a cheap dual-core over at ZipZoomFly. Its out-of-stock and, although they are different companies, NewEgg says they should be getting more in-stock Nov. 6th and I assume ZZF get more around that same date.

What surprised me the most was that the price for the processor difference is $18 with the advantage going to ZipZoomFly for its $2 Second-Day shipping (included in the $18 difference).

Here is a link to the pages:
4800+ at ZipZoomFly or Over at Newegg

OK, so that would boost my processor from a 3200+ single-core to a 4800+ dual-core, should help a bit in the gaming area.

I was also thinking of getting a RAM upgrade.

Currently I have 1GB of Kingston DDR (2 x 512MB). Here is what CPU-Z says about my RAM.

CAS# Latency: 2.0
RAS# to CAS# Delay: 2 clocks
RAS# Precharge: 2 clocks
Cycle Time (Tras): 5 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (Trc): 7 clocks
Command Rate: 1T
DRAM Idle Timer: 16 clocks

From what I read the RAM I am thinking of getting is just slightly better then this RAM timing wise and is 2GB instead of 1GB.

This RAM at Newegg or This is for ZipZoom.

Anyway, thanks for any feedback you guys provide, hopefully I will get some great feedback. :)

Peace,

Pop Smith

Close to a $10 savings with going though ZipZoom, although its not a huge deal.

Athlon 64x2 not as good for gaming, some games will crash as they don't like the dual core. Recommend getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103527
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 as far as a processor.
--EDIT--
Also, RAM wise I find corsair XMS to be one of the best.

You'll be paying more, but may be happier with those..

Yeah, I read a bit that said the X2 wasn't great for gaming so I was talking to my neighbor and he mentioned trying to find a Opteron 170 and overclock it. I might do that but we will have to wait and see.

I am still looking around too, I like the Corsair and its $240 at the moment which is the same price as the Kingston I am looking into. The only downside to the Corsair is its timings. The Kingston is 2-3-2-6 and the Corsair is 3-3-3-8.

Thanks for the input magus7091, its greatly appreciated. :)

Peace,

Pop Smith
