Hi,
I have always bought my systems in the past, but early next year I will be building a new computer myself for the first time. I was wondering first if someone has a blank check list which I can start working from in order that I don't forget anything. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Some of the basics for this machine I am looking at are:
* Full Tower (I figure more space, easier to work on and better cooling)
* Motherboard (not sure, but want a lot of PCI slots)
* CPU = Intel Core 2 Duo
* Two 250 gig HD = 500 total
* 2 - 4 gig RAM
* NVidia 512 video card
* Sound Card = Creative or Turtle Beach, not sure
* Power (not sure, maybe 600w)
* cooling (not sure)
* DVD-+RW/DL Burner
* DVD ROM
* Wireless Mouse & Keyboard
* Cable Modem (not sure)
* Phone/Fax (not sure)
* OS = Vista and Linux
* Monitor = 20" widescreen (+/-)
* Speakers = not sure
I am sure there is much more like wire, etc., etc., but this is a start.

hey dude, where you from first up as then we can point you to local e-tailors. now you seem have covered all the basics but it would be better if we also knew what you want to use it for, like a £400 graphics card would be wasted if you only play freecell.
with cases you want to look for one that has been built with airflow in mind, front and rear fans and the bigger the better, hard drive bays not mounted sidways, vents in the side panel and pos the top, but this is somthing you need to be happy with as you will be looking at it not us.
your psu is not a place to try and save some cash, you want to spend as much as you can on your psu and if you can afford a 1k one you shuold.
if i had a blank cheque mine would look somthing like:
antec p 180,
enermax galaxy ega1000ewl,
asus p5b deluxe wifi-ap,
x6800,
arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
a-data vitesta ddr2 1000+,
x1950xtx
x-fi xtreme music,

Based on "bang for buck," I'd recommend:
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, E6400 Core2Duo processor, Gigabyte 965P DS3 mobo (or 965P S3) for the core of the system.... The rest of the components can be to your liking, as, with a little research, the prices won't vary tremendously....

Thank you marsey99 & teflonmyk, I will be checking out both your suggestions and will consider them for my new system.
I live in the USA and will most likely be buying a lot from Newegg.com.
I intend to be spending in the 1500.-1700. range, (2000. tops.)

if your getting it early next year then definitly get a dx10 card and look into core 2 quad
X2 3800, A8n deluxe motherboard, 7800GT, Xion 2 case
2GB Patriot DDR 400, Audigy 2 ZS gamer, 400GB SATA RAID 0
games Im looking forward to: bioshock, SSBB, enemy territory quake wars, halo 3
currently playing: command and conquer 3, supreme commander, counter strike, shivering isles

Yes I agree, that is why I am waiting till next year. My DELL is more than enough till then. Vista, DirectX10 and now Quad-Core from Intel are more than enough reasons. Plus I am hoping prices drop after the holidays on a lot of the basics.

after a bit of thought i would swap the mobo for a p5s dh deluxe and get 2 x1950xtx's in xfire.
for the dx10 cards you will need a big psu as they have been using 350w on their own. they have made a big leap in performance but i would wait till both the red and green camps have shown their hand. the dx9 cards will plumet once they do(i hope)
as for quad cores(this should, fingers crossed, drop the conroes price) as nice as it will be when they get round to programming for them i just think its over kill, they havent started to use dual core fully yet. when they do im sure they will revolutionise the pc world, but when that is? and then theres the power they will need aswell.
always shop around as some places will do things for less than other places.
