Hi,

I'm using Nero and find that while I can burn single layer DVD's and CD's with no problems I cannot burn dual layers DVD's. I was able to previously but was burning an awful lot of coaster's so I upgraded to the latest Nero (already running version 7, just not the latest) and swapped my 80-wire - 40-pin ribbon cables for Maddog IDE133 rounded ATA cable. Now I can't burn dual layers at all. Here is the Nero log -- I've tried this with Fujifilm and some off-brand Windata.

I am at my wit's end.

First, use Verbatim. See my sig on media issues. Media is usually the cause of problems. Second, Nero is not regarded as great for DL burning. Use IMGburn 2.x for that. Also, Toshibas are not exactly mainstream drives either, so their track record is not known.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

When you make a statement like this, it seems the first thing you should try is to go back to the old cables.

The other thing I noticed is you have your DVD drive set as slave on the primary IDE channel. It may not still make a difference, but I always try to have my DVD set as master on the secondary IDE to give it full control. If you continue to have problems, you might think about changing them around.

You also might try disconnecting the Fireball to see if your burns would improve.

You appear to be writing a very small file (427MB)for a DL disc. Have you tried burns using larger files that would actually go over to the second layer?

@dbredy

Do you have a Dell pc? Make sure your burner jumpers are set to cable select, if you have recently installed a burner. Not master/slave

ImgBurn is the program to do your DL burns (and writes if you have AnyDVD).

OK, as per suggestions I changed the DVD-Writer to master, changed the cable (from a rounded IDE133 ATA to another from a different manufacturer -- unfortunately my original ribbon cable is unavailable as the connector ripped off the cable as I was originally trying to remove it). I'm now using a Modware Subzero Blue Round ATA133 IDE cable. The only thing I haven't been able to do as yet is replace the media -- I've ordered Verbatim + R DL so as soon as these arrive I'll try again. I was able to burn a double layer -- so far so good. Thanks much!
