That's an easy one.
I have also pondered your problem and really had my eyes on the Benq, However I chose the liteon SHW16H5S

I have had it for several months now and it has never let me down on any burns or lightscribe prints.
It was only last night I chose to burn my first ever dual layer and it works flawlessley.

The has been only one time when I wanted more from it and that was when I wanted to rip a TV recording from a standalone recorder that was on a DVD RAM disc (Panasonic recorder).
The Liteon could'nt read RAM but luckily I still had my pioneer 107D installed in my tower and that read the RAM no probs.

PC Specs: CPU-C2D E8400, M/B-P5N-E SLI, RAM 4Gig OCZ Platinum rev2 ,VGA- Nvidia 8800GT 512MB, HDD- Hitachi Deskstar SATAII 1TB, 250Gig Maxtor IDE HDD.
Corsair HX520 PSU, Liteon Lightscribe DVD Writer, Pioneer BluRay drive.

That drive is out of production now...so no way will you get one.

As for the next best one, I reccomend...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106019
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106023

I'd deff. go with LiteOn for a Lightscribe drive though...

Edit: Lol, we both recommended the same LiteOn as first choice! :)

I tell you something I could'nt believe when I looked into lightscribe.

HP invented the technology right?
But their drives have crap reviews and they use CMC MAG lightscribe media. Idiots!!

Yes they did. HP drives in general are crap, let alone Lightscribe ones.. (they do have a couple of good DVDR drives though)

Also, HP media is some of the worst you can buy...
Their CDs are OK though.

I'll agree with the crap quality of HP LS drives, unless you get the HP 640i which is a re-badged benq 1655 I believe. I've got the 640c,and only use it for scribing and ripping. Inferior backups,so no longer backing up dvds with mine.

Lacey makes a very good lightscribe as well, but cost more.

Edit:

The price has dropped since the last time I checked them. Here's one:

I just ordered one from newegg, liteon, but i have more ?'s
what is OEM mean and what is retail? Also i read some threads were they are doing nothing but complainig about the lite-on shm-165 h6s, the one i just ordered. what is firmware? i currently use a pioneer dvr109 and haven't had many problems, sometimes some issue about volume lock or something like that, but it works great, never had to download firmware or anything like that. have about 2300 burns and still going. Looking into lightscribe to get a better looking disc. But now i am starting to wonder. any advice would b helpful.
Thanks

OEM means it came in your PC or when you buy it, it's just the "bare bones"

Retail you get the box and all the other junk etc.

Firmware lets your drive read newer disks; updates it.

You have two great drives there.

That looks awfully similar to the Samsung SH182 (TSST) drives. Rebadge maybe?

Why does my text in the above post look like like its part of the quote? I clearly put it outside of the HTML tags, I don't see why it was included.

Bare Bones = Drive, sometimes you get cables and you usually get some software with it too.

They are new; just not in a box. lol

There is nothing wrong with buying an OEM drive, but it doesn't come with instructions or anything.

No they won't. If you fit them into an external enclosure then yes they wil. But a desktop drive won't fit a laptop lol

The drive you have is called a DVD ROM drive.

Installing a new laptop drive is very advanced and fidly.

Your best bet is to get an external dvd drive or mount an internal drive into an enclosure. If you choose the latter, enclosure, then you shouldn't cheap out on the enclosure, cos it will mess it up.

Get back to me.

Those of you looking for the BenQ1655, you can find it at C***USA under the name "Connect". You'll find the SKU number to be SKU:340022. You'll likely pay a premium for it because it's retail, not OEM. Maybe wait till Black Friday, I don't know. Have them to open the box for you and look at the unit and the warranty card. Some units are Lite-On, but they'll be SKU:340024.

As for an alternate, I've been also as happy with my NEC ND3550A. They're still around, at least. Good luck in your quest.
