PLEASE NOTE: The method I explain below is a solution that has worked for me. It may not work for you. But I post it so as to help those that may have ripping speed issues and have run out of ideas to resolve it. This post is not about who can rip their DVD the fastest. If you don't have a problem with your rip speed and are happy with what you have then good for you.

Today I was able to achieve between 6-12x ripping speed. NO JOKES!

ok, for the past 4 months I have been plotting along ripping my dvd backups at a mere 2x speed thinking that I could not do anything about this. Well today I got fed up at ripping at 2x speed and decided to experiment on my system.

My System:
Pentium 2.4GHZ
120GB HD
512MB Ram
Pioneer DVD-ROM 116 firmware 1.09
TDK CD-writer 32/10/40x
Ripping S/W: DVD Decrypter ver3.1.6.0

My original setup had my pioneer DVD-116 as a slave in the Secondary IDE on the motherboard. And my TDK Cd writer as the master in the Secondary IDE. Both daisy chained.

So I swapped them around. I made the pioneer dvd-116 the master and daisy chained the TDK as the slave. Both onto the Secondary IDE port on the motherboard.

Next I went into the Bios and ensured that the DMA for the Pioneer DVD-116 was active. (NB:Setting the DMA on your system maybe different).

I now noticed that I was able to achieve 4x ripping speed using decrypter which was great! but I wanted to go faster.

And this is how I did it.
Make sure to follow this step by step.
1) Make sure there is no DVD in the DVD-ROM. Now Open DVD Decrypter and ensure the DVD-ROM Drive is selected under the label "Source"

2)Insert the DVD into the DVD-ROM and you should see in Decrypter the files appear.

3)Now this is important. When you first inserted the DVD into the drive you should of heard the disc spinning fast (this is it spinning at max speed). In my case it spins fast for roughly 15 Secs before you can noticeably here it suddenly reduce. It's during this max spin time that I hit the "decrypt" button which then allowed me to achieve a variable rip speed between 6-12x. Somehow DVD Decrypter maintained that max speed throughout the rip.

I was able to rip (main movie only no extras) of Harry Potter and the Phil..Stone in 9min 56sec. Which to me is a huge improvement compared to 40 -45min.

I hope that you will give this a go and let me know if this has worked for you. Hopefully this will help somebody out there.

I have a feeling that allowing the DVD-Rom to get up to max speed first plays a big factor in your ripping speed along with the DVD-ROM setup I mentioned.
Maybe this is something that could be implemented into DVD Decrypter and smartripper.

I'm trying a few other experiments to try and backup my case here, so I will keep you posted.

Following on from my theory of "DVD-Rom max speed" to increase ripping speed.

This is assuming you have setup your DVD-Rom in the same manner as I have mentioned in my first post.

Nero comes with a very handy program call Nero CD Speed used to test various properties of your CD/DVD-Rom. I used this to force the DVD-Rom to spin at max speed for a certain amount of time.

Test 1:
I inserted a dvd into the DVD-Rom and waited for the DVD-ROM to become idle (approx 15secs). I then ran DVD Decrypter and was only able to manage a maximum 4x ripping speed.

Test 2:
I re-inserted a DVD and opened both DVD Decrypter & Nero CD Speed.
I Waited for the DVD-rom to become idle and then ran "Nero CD Speed" and selected only to run the spin up/down test found in the File>>Options menu. I also increased the spin-up time from 10 seconds to 20 seconds. Pressing start in Nero CD Speed, the disc would begin to test the spin-up time and you could literally hear the dvd-rom revs increase (like a humming sound). If you find it doesn't do it on the spin-up it will do it on the spin-down. At this stage I pressed Decrypt in DVD Decrypter (before the 20secs was up) and noticed that I was only ripping at 0.4x rate. I then pressed stop on Nero CD Speed(before 20secs was up) and the ripping speed shot up to 6.0x and varied between 6-12x and maintained this throught the ripping process.

I am now pretty convinced that the "DVD-Rom max speed" has played a major factor in increasing my ripping speed.

I'm not too sure how this will affect DVD's with scratches as the read speed would need to be reduced in-order to read scratched DVD's.

But let me know your experiences with the discoveries I have made.

Cheers,
Jayz

So in my conclusions:
Keeping the DVD-Rom spinning at it's maximum speed all the time will enable faster ripping speeds.
I found this great program called "cdspin" which will always have the DVD spinning at max as soon as you insert a DVD. This will probably not be suited to Laptaps running on battery power because the DVD-Rom will be using alot of power.
http://www.genx-tech.com/index.php?page=cdspin

Although it is shareware, I have found it to do the job perfectly. Just let it run minimised in your sys tray, insert a dvd disc and you will notice the dvd-rom spinning at max speed for a very long time. Now all you do is load either SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter and rip away!.
Again remember to setup the dvd-rom as in my first post(Master on Secondary IDE/DMA enabled).
As soon as you disable cdspin, the dvd-rom speed reduces back to idle mode after approx 15secs or less.

Ok, I think I've done enough typing for the night.

Good luck - keep the feedback coming through.

Thats quite an interesting theory and im glad it works for you. I will try it out later. However, with my Pioneer DVR105 hacked with 1.33 firmware, i can rip around 6x anyway. Also, having DMA enabled can cause a lot of problems for people as your NB pointed out.

Thanks
Chris

mmmmmm, bet you can't rip an rw at that speed - if you can thats good......but I don't think you can.....

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............

Don't really care about DVD-R/W.
There always has to be some-one that will try to find something negative about a good idea.

Interesting theory. Have yet to try it.

I've noticed a max of 8x for a 7.8 gig file as opposed to a 12x for a 4 gig file. I noticed that the dvd-rom gradually goes up from say 2x to the upper limits and then when it reaches halfway through ripping it starts to drop. I have yet to see something ripped at 16x though.

Actually Jayz - I wasn't trying to be negative, I think it is good that you have found a way to increase your ripping speed and ALSO sharing it on the forum......

What I should have added to my post (edit) was alot of rip speeds are dvd disc dependent, but if you are saying you can rip any dvd at 12x, then I take my hat off to you and well done....

I apologise, if it came across as a negative statement - no offense intended....

Also just a question - what speed can you re-rip a backup dvd (I know there is no info to rip), just would be interested....

Hi Tosca - Today I ripped The Music vid "G3 Live in concert" entire disc in 4min 57sec.
The total size of file on HD was 4.11GB.
The rip speed started off at approx 6.7x and gradually worked it's way up to a max 15.5x at approx the 98% mark. The only time I would see a sudden drop in speed was at the beginning of the next file being ripped.
I wish there was some way I could plot the rip speed against the Total percentage of disc.
Here is the log file of that particular rip.
http://members.optushome.com.au/fetchthis/decrypter_log.log
I just wish there was some other way to record it to prove that I did not alter the log file myself.

But you may have a point about the type of discs being ripped baabaa and I will keep this in mind.

Unfortunately I have been backing my rips to SVCD so can not test a DV-R/W rip speed. But if all goes well I hope to buy one this week.

Hey Guys I just burned my DVD at 200X

It is great and here is what I did, I took DVD Rom drive apart and stuck and elephant inside the DVD ROM but I gave it just enough room to move its trunk.

See that's key because the elephant has to be able to have as much room possible to move his trunk so he can spin the DVD at the fastest possible speed..

This is important because I know alot of you out there lack to screw your hardware together really tight.. Keep it loose kids!

Now generally an elephant can burn for about twenty minutes...But it gets tired.. So try to do this after the elephant rests for several hours otherwise, you will be burning at slow speed, like 90 or 100X..

ohh definately don't forget to feed the elphant.. you can cut a little slot on your hardware too be able to slip peanuts to the elephant.. Even though it is good to keep your elephant fed do not feed it during the burning process otherwise, you will effect the dvd spinning process like guys were saying earlier..

Good luck guys with that I hope that helps! I got up this morning and was like why I am burning at negative 4X all this years and this just hit me to try and use an elephant. I don't know what I was thinking all these years.

I went to the website adoptandelephant.com and picked up the necessary hardware there.

jayz, I can rip a 4 gig dvd in 5 minutes~5 minutes 30 seconds. I am for the most part using DVD Shrink but I started to use DVD Decrypter recently and noticed that it can rip it a tad faster (coupla seconds).

The one DVD I test ripped started around 2x then topped at around 12x for a while before dropping at around 50%~65%. Not much difference in time IMHO. 4 minutes 57 secs vs 5 minutes 15 secs for the dvd I tried.

Here is a vid of a rip I did (approx 5.7Mb):

Oh and by the way, I think someone forgot to tell Phantom that this forum is for "advanced users" and not little boys. Also I think he likes elephants because he's making up for something he hasn't got. Or maybe it was his own "elephant" he stuck in the DVD-ROM because he couldn't get the real thhing.

You poor little boy, Are you sure your parents are not cousins?

Ok Phantom, go ahead, the forum is all yours now to make an idiot of yourself.

I make my ripping faster by getting a second dvd. I got sony crx300a. My sony dru-500ax ripped at 2x and my crx300a rips at 15.8x (went to 30min to 5min to rip) Plus it saves wear and tear on my burner.

I have friend who does that same thing Scott and I have actually contemplated it myself!Right now I am not burning as much and keep hearing that better technology is on its way. Translation for me,the prices will keep falling on the stuff out now future things to come! I should be cashing in before the years out on something.

It's all good in Buck Rogers Neighborhood!
