i just received my western digital hd from newegg 160gb, i changed the jumpers in the back to master, and the new hd to slave, and started my computer, and went to my computer and it only had my previous drive C:\, i went into add hardware and found the 160gb hd and it told me its working properly, so i went into the device manager, and it told me it was running fine. so i restarted my computer and went into the bios and found the harddrive there also, but yet when i go into my computer it doesnt show up. now my question is do i have to fdisk it? or what am i suppose to do. im afraid to fdisk under the cmos because i dont want to format my original harddrive. thanx in andanve

how do i format it, i just went into the administrative tools and am formatting it right now "i think" but its taking a really long time to format, and its telling me i can only format 21.05 GB NTFS and 128.00gb Formatting under Disk 1, but is there anyway i can combine the 21.05 with the 128.00gb? because they're under the same disk 1?

okay so after the formating the harddrive as a slave drive i put it as a master drive and tried to install win xp pro on it. when i booted the computer "before installation of cd" it told me that there were no operating systems. i used this cd before to format/re-install harddrives. Im guessing i need to format it again, but i dont know how to fdisk the harddrive because i cant get to the command prompt. anyhelp would be great

anybodys help on this one? i'll try a different xp cd tomorrow, but things should work properly if i set the jumper to master/single, and plug it in with ide cables and power cable. the xp cd should take care of all the rest of the formating and installings right?

sorry mate bf2142 is taking over my life a bit.

if you just set it to boot from cd(in the bios), and them start the install it will format it before it installs xp.

you dont need to change the jumpers just the priority in the bios

have you tried pressing any key just to see if it works?

yes? ok daft question, is it possible that your disk is damaged?

or the disk drive is faulty?

i had my sister get me a 160 sata harddrive before this one and my skl told me that it was faulty, so she returned it and i got this one from newegg.com. im pretty sure its not the hard drive that is physically damaged. so that is where i am stuck. under bios it has cd/dvd as a drive. i tried swithching them between my cd rom and my dvd rom but neither one gave me anything different. in bios is wasnt specific on what brand or w/e it was

not the hard disk has a a fault, the cd itself could be scratched, or the rom drive might have the fault.

if you have more than one cd/dvd drive have you tried both?

hold on xp sp1 doesnt have support for sata drives you need to get the driver from your mobo makers website for it.

yea thats what i realized at the end after doing reaserch, and thats how i realized that the sata harddrive was faulty, but i'd say different about this new ide hard drive. so what should i do? i tried almost everything i believe. my only option left is i think to get a new win xp cd

take the jumper off the hd & see if the bios sees the drive. wd drives are not to be jumpered master if only drive on cable.

Take off jumper, power cable on hdd, ide cable is on motherboard and the middle connection is on hdd, go into bios and boot device priority, 1st boot device [cd/dvd] 2nd boot device [HDD:PM-WDC WD1600J] im taking it thats the harddrive, and 3rd boot drvice [disabled]. under hard disk drives it has 1st Drive [HDD:PM-WDC WD1600J] and thats all thats in that section

thats what im trying to do, because the computers recognizes it, and i've been told that i only need to insert the xp cd in the cd rom and that the xp cd will format the drive by its self, and i dont know how to get to a cmos for a fdisk or any of that sort

change the boot sequence to floppy, cdrom than hd. boot off the win98 boot disk & select no rom support. at the a:prompt, type fdisk & say yes to large drive. select 1 to create partition & yes to whole drive. at present don't worry if doesn't show proper size as problem is with win98. reboot & go thru same proceedure as before about no rom support. at a:prompt type format c: enter & say yes to format. don't worry about size till finished format as it should show proper size than. i did that on my 160gig wd hd but partitioned it as a 40 for windows & 120 for data.

ok i did the boot sequence first, floppy 1st, cd/dvd 2nd, hdd 3rd, insterted win 98, restarted, and got the same message error "reboot and select proper boot device..." after that i took out the hard drive totally so there would be no hard drives in teh computer and i got the same screen as before with the reboot and select proper boot device... now im not sure if its because its not formated or what, cuz under bios it told me that it had a 160gb hd. Edit: i also get the same message with my other 2 hard drives
