I have read forums for 2 days, I can't seem to find a direct answer, so maybe some nice person will help!

I have used dvdfab with dvdshrink for almost a year, burned about 150 staples dvds, NO problem (yes, I know, they are cheap, but they worked). Also, not knowing, I've ALWAYS ran programs in the background with no problem (office, internet explorer, etc.)

I started getting errors (probably based on the new copyright stuff, so I followed afterdawn advice and got rip4you/dvddecrypter/shrinkdvd, and quit running programs in the background. What a charm!!

Well, a few dvd's later, i started getting failed burns--would burn to 100% done, then the final step I'd get "fixation errors", I couldn't burn anything, so I followed advice posted and bought verbatim media. My first dvd burned fine. BUT my next attempt my cpu started bogging down to 100% usage, even opening task mgr took forever. After about 2 hours, it finally said it burned my dvd on the verbatim, but the finished disk was not usable/readable.

For the heck of it I tried using dvdfab, which had never used 100% cpu before and now IT was using up that also, so any dvd program I use COMPLETELY bogs down my computer, how can I stop this?? I don't know if I have the "fixation" error anymore because I don't have the patience to spend 3 hours doing one disc.

I have a lite-on dvd burner 16x, I'm semi-computer literate, heck, I've figured this much out, but honestly don't have anyone to help me! I can try to print logs if that helps, I really tried to read through all the posts, but couldn't find a real answer. thanks!

Hi someoneth
Here's some suggestions that may help the cpu usage.
Keep on the the pc maintenace bit.
Weekly do a disc defrag, anti virus and spyware scans, run a registry cleaner like ccleaner. Use the cleaner and issues options.

Check and make sure all drives are in DMA mode - DMA should also be listed under 'current transfer mode'. Here's a guide:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Have Nero? If you're autoburning w/ Shrink and not picking decrypter to burn then you should have a log that can help.

Post the last log. They are usually separated by something like
this: ========****Nero BurningRom History****========
You can find them here:
Nero 6 - program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
Nero 7 - program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory

Just be sure to edit out the serial # - usually begin w/ 1A,1C or 5C.

I regularly defrag, virus, and spyware scan, i just looked at the dmi thing, both drivers have both "dma if available", the primary device 0 has ultra dma mode 5, but device 1 has "not applicable" under current transfer mode. For the secondary, has both dma if available, but "current transfer mode" for device 0 is pio mode and device 1 is ultra dma mode 4. The link you sent said just to uninstall if the "transfer mode" was pio, not the current transfer mode, did I read that right because it looked like you were telling me that everything should say dma??

Also, I did finally let ripit4me run from start to finish with monster house, it said it burned successfully, but again, my computer AND my dvd player won't play it. The computer at least recognizes it is a dvd and starts to open power dvd, but nothing will happen from there. Why does it say it burns successfully if nothing will read it

here is the last log that I just did where the disc finished "successfullly" but did not work (thanks, your instructions are very detailed--except if I should still uninstall those 2 devices because everything doesn't say dma:

i went through nero's tool and neither one had dma, so I uninstalled both and now they looked fine, everything said dma (except the primary device 1 still said not applicable for current transfer--dont' know if that is a problem)

Anyway, I tried burning the files again (just opened up DVD Shrink and opened the file folder of a different movie that I also never got to burn, it said successfully burned, but again, my computer and dvd player cannot recognize and play it! I've also uninstalled and reinstalled all programs earlier today before I posted (nero/ripit4me/dvddecrypter/dvdshrink)

should i just give up and reformat my harddrive and start from scratch!!!

Hang tight on the reformat :)

Device 1 on the Primary showing not applicable is ok. No drive is attached to that port so nothing to report on.

You now have the one that was in PIO back in DMA as NeroToolKit reported so you're ok there too. That was helping the pc bog down.

When checking DMA mode look and have both 'transfer mode' - 'DMA available' and - 'Current Transfer Mode' Ultra DMA and a #'

Update the firmware on the LiteOn - you're a bit behind. The latest is JSOD:
http://www.liteonamericas.com/twnmain/DO...re/DR16JS0D.zip

Burn process completed successfully at 16x
You're using good media but let's burn these at 8x speed. Players can be very picky.

Nero API version: 6.3.1.26
Bit behind on Nero too - use this version - 6.6.0.18:
Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2 (recode & vision)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

With the updated Nero - Nero may automatically booktype these +R's to DVD-Rom which makes the player thinks it's a DVD-Rom - gives more compatability. Your drive supports this.

To see if it will go to Burning Rom (may need to have a blank disc in the drive) then choose recorder. There will be a options buttons - click it on and see if booktyping/bitsetting is there. If it is pick automatic.
I have a LiteOn a few models back from yours and I didn't have these options. I had to booktype thru NeroToolKit>CD-DVD Speed under bitsetting for every +R disc.

Now my new LiteOn - Nero does the automatic booktype to DVD-Rom.

When using Shrink look under the burn settings tab once you clicked backup. Shrink also has an option to check to booktype to DVD-Rom.

Now let's give all this a go & let us know!

Ok, I did EVERYTHING you said, including the ccleaner, except try changing to 8x instead of 16x, I wasn't real sure how to do that. Also, If I read your post right, it said it was ok to leave the "book" whatever it was to say dvd- even though these are dvd+'s?? I didn't mess with that since it was ready to burn

Anyway, running dvddecrypter with ripit4me still runs at 100%, however, once I get to dvdshrink, it ran between 50-100 (looked like a heartbeat monitor spiking up and down every few seconds), Nero burned at an average of 10%. It "seemed" to burn fine, said it was successful, but again, NOT playable in either computer dvd player or my tv dvd player

First question, does dvddecrypter run that slow? or is that still a problem?

I would guess maybe there is something wrong with my dvd burner, but that doesn't explain all the slowness

And I guess the main question, why aren't the disks recognizable/playable? (sometimes when I put them in the computer dvd player, they will actually have the label "monster house" or whatever on the directory, but this last time, my computer won't even recognize there is a disk in the drive!

What else can I be doing wrong? I'm going to put in an old disk I know has burned in the past and try using just dvdshrink like the old days and see if it will burn properly.
Here is the log from the last unsuccessful "successfully burned" dvd!

(it might show where I stuck a cheapy staples disk in first, just as an experiment, but it wouldn't even pick up the disk as being in there, it did pick up the verbatim right away though!

I just noticed the secondary changed itself back to pio for device 0, I swear I did not go in and change it!!! Is that normal to switch by itself? I just went in and uninstalled and reinstalled it like yesterday.

thanks again for all your help

ok forget reformatting, i'm ready to throw the computer out the window, in my last post, from the prior post, I realized the dma had switched back to current being pio, so I've followed the directions and uninstalled it twice reinstalled it and BOTH times it comes back with PIO Only and PIO Mode for both device 0 & 1 on the secondary, how do I get it to be dma again???!!! The primary seems to stay ok.

Also, I tried burning a "test" of an old scooby doo dvd that i've had for 2 years with just dvdshrink since I knew that worked at one time, it was encoding at 100% again, maybe that is due to the pio thing being messed up, so I just ended it until I can figure out how to get back to dma again.

Hi.

You're still burning at 16X. Change the write speed to 8X or 4X. I'd try 4X to be safe.

It also appears there are a couple of versions of Nero mixed on our system. Did you run the Nero 6 Clean Tool before changing versions?

Drives will slip back into PIO mode from DMA mode if there are comm problems on the bus. It was your DVD reader (ROM) that slipped back into PIO mode, not your burner.

ok, i did get the dma's back everywhere, and dvdshrink is running between 25-50%, much better than 100, scooby is about 1/2way encoded, so we'll see how that goes! Just wanted to let you know to ignore the dma/pio problem!

laddyboy, question on the Nero . . .

this is what binkie7 put:

Nero API version: 6.3.1.26
Bit behind on Nero too - use this version - 6.6.0.18:
Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2 (recode & vision)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

I downloaded & installed BOTH of these was that wrong??!! Also, no I did not use a "nero 6 clean tool" I did not know to do that.

I did finish the test run of burning my old scooby do (I left it at 16x and even used a staples dvd and it burned fine and is playable) I guess that is good news that my burner is not bad,

first- is there something different i need to do with Nero since i didn't run the clean tool (and where do i get the clean tool) and should I have only installed one of those two updates??

second- i'll try doing monster house with rip4me/dvddecrpyter at 4x if i can figure where to change the speed! thanks again for all your help and patience. I feel like I'm learning at least!

Hi someoneth
Your fine on the Nero - you now have the 6.6.0.18 version using the user interface of version 6.3.1.4.

If your reading from the dvd-rom drive when it's in PIO mode that would account for the high CPU usage.

When you use RipIt4Me you can change the burn speed when it gets to Shrink. Once you click 'back up' pick your drive under 'target device' then click on the 'burn settings' tab. You can change the speed there.

No problem on the help :)

Keep us posted!

I have a usable Monster House copy! I did two things different this time.

I ran rip4me the wizard mode instead of 1click or whatever it is called, and did set the burn speed lower.

I do have one more question though

on shrinkdvd when I change the burn speed my options are as follows:

maximum
1.0x (1385kb's)
2.0x (2770kb's)
2.4x (3324kb's) (not a typo, option 3 says 2--unless those aren't numbering options before the x number)

that is exactly what the drop down menu reads. I picked the last one, but what the heck do the others mean with 0x?? and since I have a 16x burner, why doesn't it give me a ooption for doing an 8x burn?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is fixed, I REALLY appreciate your help! (and my kids do too!!)

Yea - good deal :)

The listings you have under burn speed are the different burn speeds -even the ones listed like 1.0 - just means 1x.

2 reasons you would have only these options is - 1) you don't have a blank in the drive or 2) you are reading & writing from the same drive.
Some drives will only list the supported write speeds of the source disc and max.

So for option 1 put the blank in 1st when you start RipIt4Me. For option 2 you can just have Shrink save to a hard drive folder. When done you can use Express in Nero and add the video_ts then burn. Your burn speeds to pick from will be listed on the last screen.

one more question, although i haven't watched the new monster inc from start to finish, it does look like it works (on my dvd player only though), BUT it does NOT work on either dvd drive on my computer, it starts to load up, but then freezes up, i've tried it in two different programs to run (windows media player and power dvd), i read on a post that you can "check your new disk" in Nero, when i try this, it realizes there is a disk in there, but it doesn't run the check for good/bad, it just locks up.

Is there something i'm still not doing right? or should i just give up and be happy it will at least play on my tv??

thanks again!

Hi someoneth
No that really shouldn't happen - the burner at least should recognize the media it burned or a blank and the media id on it.
Your using good media too.
Then you have the one drive reverting back to pio mode. Something could be up with the ide cable but I don't think that would case the disc not being recognized in the burner.
Do you have another pc you can try this burner in?
Another cheap option may be to use a dvd lens cleaner on them or blow some canned air in them. Dust can build up on the lens and cause problems.

I'm sure cleaning would be a good idea, we live in the desert, very dusty!!

what is a good type of lens cleaner? i've seen disks in stores that you put that cleaner fluid on and spin, is that what you recommend? (Not to sound dumb, but I'm not really even sure where the lens is in the dvd drive!!

Thanks again for all your help! (no, I don't have another pc with a burner)

I just use the ones that have a small soft brush on the dvd - you can pick them up at like Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples etc.
Good for dvd players too even if it's doesn't help the drive.

Give it a whirl - may help.

The dvd rom not reading (almost forgot) may need a firmware update to to help read these. This drive come with the pc? Who's the manufacturer of the pc?
You can check which version you have in Nero. Go to ToolKit>InfoTool. Pick the DVD-Rom drive in the drop down. Then click on the drive tab. There's a field there that lists the firmware version.
