My HP740b writer has slowed down 3 times over the 10 months I have had it. All times drops write and read speeds to 0.7x's (from 8x's). First time was able to correct it with clearing hard drive of excess movie files, and then ran defragmentor 2-3x's and it worked. Second time ran new firmware and it worked. Happened again 2 days ago and I cant get it to read/burn faster than 0.7x's...suggestions?

did you see if your drive is slipping to PIO mode? Turn the DMA back on! read this:

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have checked that problem (all 3 times), read that could be an issue. DMA engaged everytime.

MY HP 740b GRADUALLY GOT SLOWER DOWN TO 4.0-4.2x FOR 40x CD`S,AND DOWN TOO 0.6-0.7x FOR 8x DVD`S.
ALSO I WAS GETTING A RUNTIME ERROR R-6025 PURE VIRTUAL CALL EVERYTIME I SHUT DOWN SONIC MY BURNING SOFTWARE.
THE RUNTIME ERROR WAS CAUSED BY WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 CONFLICTING WITH SONIC DIGITAL MEDIA HOMEv7,ROLL BACK TOO WMP10 AN EVERYTHING IS FINE.
AS FOR THE SLOW BURNING ISSUE ID ALREADY TRIED UPDATING MY DRIVERS WITH NO LUCK AND ALSO UPDATED MY FIRMWARE TWICE BUT GOT TOLD THAT THE FIRMWARE INSTALLED WAS ALREADY UPTO DATE,BUT AFTER FOLLOWING A THREAD FROM ANOTHER FORUM I GOT TAKEN TO HP WEBSITE AND THIS TIME THEIR LASTEST FIRMWARE FOR HP740b WAS RELEASED 03/03/06 WHICH IS OLDER THAN MY PC,BUT I NOTICED THAT MY VERSION WAS HI24 AND THE WEBSITES WAS HJ24 IV SINCE DOWNLOADED IT AND MY BURN SPEEDS ARE ALL BACK TO NORMAL....
