I have a 51" Sony Widescreen CRT TV. Can someone explain why when watching a 16.9 widescreen movie DVD that there is black bars on the top and bottom. I thought they were formatted to fill the whole screen. Thanks

1:78 AR will fill the screen. 2:35 will not and that's when you see the black bands top and bottom. Some older DVDs will have black bands on all four sides.

I am a full time media student.

The movies still have black bars because the studios filmed the movie in Ultra Widescreen format, optimized for cinema. And because of the original images are in superwidescreen, the image would have to stretch to make 16:9. The only solution is using the zoom function on your dvd player until you feel comfortable with the picture your getting.
