Hi there, hopefully some of you guys could help me out here as I don't really know that much about the hardware of a pc.
Anyway, for the past while I've been getting internet explorer errors when i close internet explorer. It says something like "there was a problem shutting down", "send error report, debug" and ect..
so tonight I got the latest updates from microsoft for my internet explorer and it seems a little better BUT it doesn't help my real problem which is, my pc is after getting very noisy in the past couple of days.
I noticed it on saturday night.
Usually if the pc is doing something, a little light flickers at the front of the pc and it makes a little noise. But on saturday, even though left idle, the light was flickering and it was making noise.
This stopped on sunday but it's gotten worse now and tonight it's very noisy. It's like there is a fan at the back of the pc and it's blowing bigtime. It stops from time to time and then starts again.
Is my pc over heating ?
I do leave it on nearly every night, mostly I do transcode a film over night or sometimes leave a torrent downloading. But every night it's left on. I also do a lot of burning on the pc.
When I go into the task manager it goes from 2/8/65/98 % usage. And back down again.
My pc is only about 1 and a half years old.
It an emachines 5260, p4 processer, 512ram, 2.93ghz.
Anyone shed some light on this?

I think you'd be better off asking a moderator to move this to the pc hardware forum instead man, you'd probably get more help there, as this sounds like a hardware problem to me...

This sounds like a problem I just had. I'm willing to bet it's your CPU cooling fan. Most likely, it will need to be replaced.
At first, I thought it was my hard drive. So I replaced the hard drive with a new one. Problem not solved. A friend of mine told me that it was probably one of the fans. I tried a new power supply because I thought that the fan may have been going bad. That wasn't the case. Once again, problem not solved. I have a Dell Dimension desktop, so I contacted Dell and I had to order a new CPU cooling fan. That's what it was. No more annoying noise.

Yes I gave the pc a rest last night, well it's been left off for 7 hrs and when I tured it on, it was quiet so I suspected it was been worked too hard but now after about 20 mins, it's pretty noisy again.
When I put my hand at the back of the pc, I can feel the fan blowing pretty hard.
Am I doing damage to my pc by keep using it?
Does it cost much to get the cpu fan replaced ?

you can monitor your temps with speedfan (click where it says speedfan 4.31), it will also give you some details on the fittness if your hdds aswel(unrelated but still nice to know), then if you post back with your temps we can tell you if it is your hsf.

Ok, thanks for the replys.
I'm just after running that speed fan now and it reads.......
CPU: 64c (With a little flame beside it!)
Internal Temp: 47c (with a correct mark beside it!)
Remote Temp: 47c ( with a correct mark beside it!)
HDO: 33c (with an arrow pointing downwards!)
Also it says......
Fan 1: 3018 RPM
Fan 2: 0 RPM
Fan 3: 0 RPM
Fan 4: 2351 RPM.
The CPU usage seems to be going from 0% up to and including 7% and back to 0 % again.
This good or bad?

that is running warm, if i was you i would remove your heatsink fan from the cpu and give it all a good clean, you will need to get somthing like this and follow this. you might also want to give the rest of the case's inside a bit of a clean aswel, cans of compressed air are great to get it off the board then you can vacume it up off the bottom of the case
does your case have any fans? or vents? or fan mounts where you can fit a fan or two?
the best air cooler you can get are these and it would drop your temps even more but you will still need to follow the first two links to fit it.
with the cpu% it is different with each machines as we all have different things running on them, if your concerned open the task manager(right click the bar at the bottom of the screen) and look at the processes tab and google any that you are worried about. mine flicks up to between 4 and 6 when its idle so id guess 7% is nothing to be concerned about.

im not sure of your mobos socket so that might not be the right hsf for you board, they do make them for other sockets though.

First of all, thanks for the help.
I'll open my pc in the morning and give it a clean.
I have never cleaned it since I've had it so it'll do good anyway.
As far as installing fans and stuff, well I'm outa my league there.
Basically I'd just like to have my nice quiet pc back lol, so, if I was to bring it to pc world or somewhere similar, would they be able to sort it out without messing up my hd/pc ?
I appreiciate the help.

if noise is at back of comuter than most likely is psu fan needs lubrication. when computer is 1st started up after being off for a few hours or all night. does it make a groaning noise that somewhat dissappears after a while?

Yes when it starts up it makes the noise then stops after awhile but the noise re-appears then later on, whether it be 40mins or an hour.
The noise actually sounds like an engine of something revving up.
I had the pc turned off for awhile there, and it seems ok now but 30mis down the line it will start up again.

pcworld would be great if you dont want to do it yourself. a bit dear but if they do mess anything up you can blame them and get it fixxed.
they will most likly tell you you need a new psu which will set you back about £50 for a cheap one.
looking up the thread i see you have one case fan installed, probably on the rear pushing the air out. what you want to do is look for any vents on the front or sides and see if they are clogged with dust, as this will put more pressure on the rear and psu fan. aswel as force air to come in through places you dont want it to, dvd drives, usb ports and anywere else it can.
what ever you do dont go at it with a staticly charged duster as pcs dont like it. lint free cloths are best and q tips for the hard to reach bits in between things if you cant get a can of compressed air.

Hi, just a quick update on this.
I was talking to a friend of mine today that works in a pc shop.
He reckons the cpu fan is gone or very dirty.
I just opened the pc there and although not that dusty, it was still dusty.
The fan on the side of the pc, I don't know the name for it, well that was quite dusty so I hoovered it out.
Even though cleaned best I could, there is still clumps of dust behind the actual fan itself.
I did the best i could but I'm leaving the pc in tomorow so I'm sure he'll give it a better clean.
?20 for a cpu fan + installation, would this be correct?

True. Well it seems to be not as load now, even when burning!!
I'm going to leave it in anyway and if it needs a new fan then so be it, if not I'll be happy with a good clean :-)

Just an update on this.
Brought the pc in yesterday. He had a look and said he didn't believe the fan had to be changed so he blew what ever more dust was left and now it sounds a hell of a lot better.
Problem does seem to be solved I have to say, but he said if it does make that heavy fanning noise again, bring it back and he will change the fan.
I happy enough for the time being anyway :-)

Marsey,
i was just curious, i downloaded that SpeedFan program, but i do not understand something. i have 3 fans going in computer. but when i do the speedfan test, i only shows one. why is that? and how do i read the temps?

if the fan is not connected to the mobo(sensor) speedfan wont know it so probably the cpu fan is the only one it detects and not the others.

the fans have to have 3 wires so program can see the fan: 12v, ground & sensor.
