I keep having problems with DVD Shrink and Nero combo. It seems no matter what I do I wind up with these stupid coasters. I have wasted more money in DVD's than my burner is worth. The most recent error is posted below,..can anyone help!!??

What media are you using? Like Sony +R 8x? All your drive sees is this:Media type: DVD+R
A firmware up date may help - here's a link:

But the last update on this drive was over 2-1/2 year ago so if you are using newer media like 16x or lower quality can be the reason you see alot of these in the log: SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND

I was using memorex but was told it was bad media so I switched to Sony. I keep getting errors though. Any other ideas?

Did you try updating your firmware?
Sony is good media but this is an older drive that may have problems with newer media.
What's the rated burn speed - you'll see something on the package like 1-16x or similar.
For this drive I would try 8x or under rated media.

I am trying to update my firmware,...having some issues finding my original cd for the burner software. However, the odd thing is that the burns always go until 100% and on closing the disk, it fails. Any ideas?
Thanks for helping on this, I was getting really frustrated on my own!

I don't think you need the original cd to update the firmware. You should just be able to dl an .exe file then run it. (just checked the instructions on the link - run the .exe - instructions are included).
You need to be connected by a USB hub which it looks like you are.
Try reducing the target size in Shrink to 4360. Go to edit>preferences.
Pick custom and type in 4360.
From the burn above looked like it had a few minutes to go (failed after like 7 mins).
No problemo on the help :)
Yeah pc problems can be a pain!!
Give those 2 a go and keep us posted!

I went to the link you posted, downloaded it, and when I opened it, it said I had to have the RecordNow program originally downloaded. I have spent 3 hrs on the phone today trying to speak to someone at HP and not once have I spoken with someone in technical support. I have searched the web exhaustively to no avail. I am trying to burn any one of House season II, 24 season II, or Grey's Anatomy season 1 and thus far I have wound up with 0 DVD's, and 7 coasters since Sunday. :-( !!! I have seen several forums where people have just thrown this burner away because it has caused so many problems,...should I just ditch it? Again much thanks.

If it was me - yep I'd ditch.
Older drive that only handles +R media and a max burn speed of 4x.
You can get a good external like a LiteOn that supports all the new media.
Media for it is getting hard to find.
Sorry missed the part about Record Now in the firmware update instructions!
That would be another reason to get a new drive - easier to update the firmware :)

I am going to be checking the internet for a new burner,...in the mean time if you want another piece to the puzzle: I was able to find a free version of RecordNow and downloaded it. That enabled me to get the updated firmware for the drive. I had selected the smaller burn size on the previous burn but must have closed it and re-opened DVD Shrink and forgot to change it again. However, this is a new burn error,...same disks,...and ideas?

Once you change a setting in Shrink it keeps that as a default so this one did have the target size reduced - you can see it here in the log:
Last address to be written: 2232879 (496:11.54, 4361MB)
And you're still getting these:
SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND.
The new one is Illegal disc
which basically means the drives firmware doesn't support the media.
This burn failure happened sooner than the others - but still pointing to the drive and/or media.
Physical memory : 511MB
Free physical memory: 103MB
Memory in use : 79 %
More memory is use this time - keep as much memory free as possible - no multitasking.
