disc error when playing back dvdr's burned with nero.

i downloaded some movies off of a torrent website. they are in .avi format. i used winAVI to convert them to dvd format. i have Nero 6 ultra edition that i use to burn the movies. i have burned a couple that work completely fine. but i have gone through 10 dvdr's in the past couple hours, and everyone i burn..when i try to play it in my standalone dvd player, i get a disc error. i havent changed any settings in Nero or winavi. i have also tried downloading a different version or Nero, and using DivXtoDVD to convert the AVI files to dvd format.

i have the following hardware:

sony vaio pentium 4, 3.00GHZ, 504MB RAM
pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D

i have been using HP invent DVD-R 16x DVD-R discs

my standalone dvd player is:

magnavox mwd200f ...i checked it out, and it is supposed to work really good for playing burned dvd's.

if anyone has any suggestions as to what it could be, please let me know. i am stumped. i have looked through every troubleshooting guide i can find, but nothing i try makes any difference.

Have you tried to play them while still on your HD before burning them to disc?

With Nero Showtime choose 'Play from folder' and see if they work.

i play all the .avi files when they finish downloading to make sure they all play. and are all working.

i attempted to play one of the failed burned dvd-r's on my computer, and it plays, but the picture messes up a lot. and there is no audio.

That's not what I meant. I mean the converted files, not the original AVI. With Nero choose 'Write to Hard Disk folder'. You will end up with your files in a VIDEO_TS folder. Use Nero Showtime (or any app you have) to see if they are working correctly, menu, chapter stops etc.

Whatever app you choose for converting save to HD first.

okay.i located the files that the converter saved in the video-ts folder. i dont have Nero showtime. so im not really understanding how to verify that those files work. will they play in windows media player or creative media player. because those are the only other players i have on here. i didnt think that the.vob etc files were able to be played on any players. just burned.

You sure? It shound be there. Look in Nero-> Nero Digital-> Nero Showtime.

Or try this, find the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Right click-> Open with-> Choose program, then find WMP.

okay. i got it to play with windows media player. it plays fine. all of the chapters play fine. everything shows up.

could it be possible that something that is running on my computer while its burning could be messing it up? i close out all of my instant messengers and download programs while i burn. so the only things that are running while i am burning are:

wireless internet connection
norton antivirus

also: i have noticed that when i make a backup copy of a dvd using xilisoft dvd ripper 4. that when i burn it, it is very shaking and skips a lot. or the dvd will play almost like a slide show kinda deal. i run slysoft AnyDVD while i rip it so it removes the copyrighty stuff, etc.

geez. i dont know whats up with anything. i have had the worst luck EVER with this pc.

Well there's a chance your media is the culprit, much HP stuff is made by CMC, hated by most folks here.

Get ImgBurn (free). It will tell you who makes it.

You might also bypass Nero to see if it's the problem by trying a burn with ImgBurn. Follow these directions.

okay awesome. i will try out imgburn and see if it works any better. i like Nero. but i have heard that it has tons of problems with xp. i havent tried burning with anything else yet.

another question. instead of burning a dvd video disc. is there a way that i can take a downloaded .avi file and convert it to an iso or anything like that?

so do you think it is definitely a media problem?? i check the properties of the dvd-r's, and they are CMC.

what are some good inexpensive brands that i could get?

Nothing is definite, it's a possibility.

None that I would use. I always use Verbatim, they work good in most burners. Folks here will tell you to buy media that's 'Made in Japan', that's sound advice.

The question now is have you ever played any burns in that player? Can you try one of your discs in another player?

yeah. i burned a couple of movies on the dvd-s's that i have right now. and they work just fine. but none i have trieed to burn after that work at all. i dont have another dvd player here that reads burns. i played the disc on my pc after it burned. and it works just fine on the computer. also: if it would help you out at all, i used Nero into tool, and here is all of the info it brought up. at the end is something about the ASPI (may have that wrong) being corrupted or something like that. anyways, heres all the info.

ok i uninstalled everything. ran clean tool. installed latest version 7.5.7.0. i havent tried to burn anything yet. was gonna give it a go with the new version. try to burn a dvd iso disc and see how that works out. but here is all the info from the new info tool thing i ran...

is there any way to switch that? to where things will show up right?

i tried to burn a dvd-video disc with the new Nero. i ran AnyDVD while i was doing it. just to see if it made any difference at all. but still no luck. haha. im so lost on this stuff.

all i want is to burn some damn movies :) haha.

i bought some memorex dvd-r's. but i havent opened them yet. i was waiting to see if we could figure anything out on this before i did, that way i could take them back.

well, im off to bed for the night.

hit me back. and i will check it in the morning before work.

hopefully we can get this figured out.
