i have 512 RAM installed, and i want to upgrade to 1G
I have 2 sticks of 256 DDR-SDRAM right now. 2x184 pin
I already checked, and my motherboard will let me upgrade to 2G
What I would like to know is what is what is the best kind of RAM and namebrands.
Thanks :D

Personally I recommend either kingston or corsair, but corsair is the better of the two (imho)

Every night has its day.
Even forever must come to an end....
I think.

Post your mottherboard model number etc... then we can see what setup of ram is bet for you.
You may well be better off changing yout 2x256 sticks for 2x 512 rather than adding another 2x256 to what is already in there.

P.S.
I agree with the Corsair recommendation 100%, you won't regret buying it that's for sure.

Thanks for all the help :D
My comp is an AMD Anthlon running XP Home Edition
I just upgraded my hard drive about a month ago to a 260GB.
The motherboard is A7V8X-MX SE...is ASUS
It only has 2 slots for memory.
I thought that I should upgrade the RAM next. Any suggestions would be great. I wasnt sure if I should get just 1 stick or 2 sticks of 512...please tell me what you think

i would go with doubles so that if 1 goes bad you would still have 2nd 1 to use.

Performance wise, there is no gain in using 2 memory modules, as the board chipset does not have dual channel memory support.

So you have to decide if you want 2x 512MB giving you the redundancy of having the 2 sticks if one goes wrong or if you want the better upgrade path by having the free slot when using a single 1GB stick.

The latter will allow you to also use one of your 256 MB sticks along with the 1GB, giving you the extra capacity straight away, rather than having to sell or store your present sticks.

At least you have the options, both are worth looking at, but you'll jut have to decide which is more appealing to you.

A 1 x 1GB will be slightly cheaper than a pair of 512MBs. so that might also sway your decision.

thank you all so much...this has been a great help. I will go with 1 stick, and keep 1 of my 256 in case anything happens, that way it will be cheaper when i decided to get the other 1G of RAM.
